I too have done one of those high-calorie 20-rep squat programs. Yes, you get stronger. And yes, you get heavier. But it took me about 8 months to lose all the fat I had gained -- and guess what?! I was no more muscular than when I started.
I recall Harry Paschall despised the heavy eating squat programs. I think he called them slop and drop. I'm going by memory here but I believe it was Mark Berry who populised them in the Paschall era.
They're actually counter productive in my view because you spend months on an calorie deficit trying to shed the mountains of blubber. And I'm sure there are a lot of guys who gain all the fat and never lose it. They no doubt tell everyone about how much weight they gained, but leave out the fact it was mostly fat.

Henry -Can I ask: 1. Did you measure your bodyfat before and after? Didn't was 150 lbs before and at 174 did have more body fat. Today I'm 136lbs but very lean.2. How much heavy training (eg squats) prior to using this program were you doing? Did 20 rep squats, started at maybe 120lbs (can't remember) then added 5lbs each workout and soon was doing 225 lbs for 20. Even though I had not abs my strength was way up and overall muscle size was bigger. In 2 more weeks (Oct. 27 2017) I'm retiring from working, so plan to get more into training without burning all my calories at work.. When I did the Truly Huge it was during a winter lay-off then went back to work landscaping and maintain 166lbs for a year till I got a building site job and that summer was very hot so didn't eat much and lost 15lbs, then when on to study Aikido for 4 years.

That is the thing I cannot get my head around, when some people say they that they have gained size/muscle it normally means that in order to do that they have gained bodyweight. People who have never trained can also gain size just by eating more food, the fatter they get the bigger their whole body gets. So as whiffet says how much of that is actual muscle, competitive bodybuilders always give the illusion of muscle gain when going in for a competition. The thing is that certain strict diets, can blow up the muscles so they are bigger that normal, it is not actual muscle growth.
I have not seen any transformations, yet that have not included gaining or losing of bodyweight, as for me if I went up to my previous weight of 210 lbs, I would gain 2 inches on my chest and waist, 1/2 an inch on my arms and 1 inch on each thigh. So basically an extra 2 inches of fat on my waist.

Whiffet/Blag,
Gentlemen, you're right on the mark.
I know I got "bigger" once I stopped all the running due to injuries and focused more & more on weights. But, to your (objective) points, being big included more fat on the waist and I have no doubt intramuscular fat in my arms, chest, etc. Stored triglycerides -- "fat" -- isn't all stored in the liver, omentum and waist -- the body tries to distribute the load. Especially as I hit my late 30s and 40s, any time I went on a bulking routine or trying to hit a new bench or DL PR, that increase on the scale was probably <20% lean gains.

Henry I do appreciate your input and info, Thanks. I was more curious than anything. I have also tried that routine years ago. I tend to agree with Whiffet and Blag, same experience.
Although my arms are not big who wouldn't want to have a little size on them. Honestly in my Forties I think I should be thinking more on the lines of health, moving without pain and the waist line.

In your forties??! For cryin' out loud! I was in my prime in my forties and could do anything! I'm not trying to say in the forties is old. Just saying not having a lay up job I have to think Longevity. More weight on me just doesn't work because of past on the job injuries. Keeping my weight down I feel really good. Don't worry I can still do almost anything, . Not quite the same as you but I can hold my own.

In your forties??! For cryin' out loud! I was in my prime in my forties and could do anything! I agree there Bruce! I'm 40 next month and both look and feel in optimum shape. My cardio is now better than it has ever been. I post on a surf page on Facebook and it's weird that many guys who hit 40 talk about themselves as being old men now who can't do much anymore. I guess though if people have families, have to work long hours, and have let themselves get in bad shape then I can see why they feel old.

Time for you to settle down? There's only one person I wanted to settle down with. I messed that up, and no one else comes close.
