I've spent a few hours this week training with an aikido group my friend started, he has been doing it for about 15 years and I was very skeptical of how effective it is, it usually get's called bs and I "followed the crowd"
First thing I will say is REAL Aikido and the stuff you see is completely different.
I turned up and saw them doing these over exaggerated throws etc and was like, whatever.
My friend asked me to spar him as if it was a fight and I obliged, he could of snapped my wrists several times and took me down with some really unorthodox techniques, I did have a good go though i'm not a completely brain dead zombie, it feels and looks awkward because he offered me absolutely no resistance ever until he had me in a position where he could throw me or wrist lock me.
he went on to explain that what is taught is the way to control people without hurting them but anyone who isn't a sheep will be able to slightly adjust the lock and turn it into a real painful technique. Completely changed my mind and convinced me to sign up it was like fighting a ghost, he was 50lbs lighter than me as well.
Still think he needs to stop having a boner for Steven Seagal though.
