One other note, as I've mentioned in the past; I feel it works best if I eat a meal with high fat, then I eat it with no or very little carbs. Vice versa, if I eat a meal with high carbs, I eat it with no or very little fat. Protein can be more or less to taste in either case, but if you want to be obsessive about it, watch out for fat in the protein. For example, meat and potatoes, depending on the cut of meat, may be high in fat in relation to carbs, but I like it, I eat it very infrequently and have had no issues. I'm more likely to eat eggs with potatoes, rice or beans and an egg has about 5g/45 calories of fat or less than 0.1 the amount of fat in 4oz of meat. Eat what works for you.

I’m on day 9 of OMAD (one meal a day) as part of ramping up my discipline which includes several days this week of a 24 hour fasting period. I’m doing this to button down my dietary discipline as the holiday season approaches but it’s also part of a slightly over 3 month period I’d given myself to get back to consistently weighing in at 170 lbs by my 67th birthday. I’ve got about 6 lbs. to go. I’m currently reminded that lighter is better for my old turd knees, plus my pull-ups performance is better lighter.
I have lots of experience fasting but have never had any interest in ketosis or autophagy.

When I did my hardcore keto diet I dropped to about 155lbs and looked pretty scrawny. It’s a tricky thing because the fat will make you feel so satiated you will end up eating at a caloric deficit, so it definitely works in that regard. I don’t believe from my own experience I can lose body fat if I am eating carbs of any significant amount. That will always be the easiest path for the body to draw energy from. To drop fat I have to go almost zero carb

When I did my hardcore keto diet I dropped to about 155lbs and looked pretty scrawny. I don’t believe from my own experience I can lose body fat if I am eating carbs of any significant amount. That will always be the easiest path for the body to draw energy from. To drop fat I have to go almost zero carb It depends on what you are calling "carbs". The carbs I eat are apples, blueberries, beans, broccoli, potatoes ...... nutritious cellular carbs. I never eat toxic glutens, breads, pasta, donuts, grains, pizza, cereals, cookies, etc, and NO sugar. I'd like to see anyone get fat by eating 10# of broccoli per day. (Sans condiments) Someone posted a video not long ago of a vegetable eating, tiny woman who voraciously ate obscenely huge amounts of carbs and was so trim I thought she was unattractive, but she looked healthy. EDIT: OK, found her. Chef AJ on youtube. She's apparently vegan and eats carbs, carbs and carbs. I expect she is also in and out of ketosis, just like everyone else, but she's definitely not eating the epileptic diet.

Chef AJ shares the same view as Dr Mcdougall I believe, she pretty much eats half a plate starch (potatoes, rice etc) and half a plate of low energy vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower etc) around 3-4 times a day, she looks a bit gaunt if I am being completely honest and although she may be healthier than when she was a bigger lady she looks like she aged a ton. Just an observation, although I would pick her diet over the HFLC option.

Yes, Type II Diabetes is caused by poor diet and the diet to reverse it also works to shape up. However, I disagree with Tim Ferriss in that article on "Rule 1", about avoiding potatoes specifically, and his limited list of foods that appears to avoid eating fat (like listing, "egg whites" and "white meat chicken"). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with his list, just that, if the portions/net calories are OK, eat whatever nutrient dense food suits. i.e., Dark meat chicken and whole eggs are fine if from a pastured source. It is the processed "foods", refined sugars, cooking oils and toxic glutens (loads of sugars, oils and glutens hidden in spices and condiments, BTW) that are the main enemies of the Type II acquired diabetic. IMO, healthy fat (like dark meat chicken, beef, lard, etc) is not an issue as long as calories are in check. I do agree with "Rule 2" as a good place to start to build up a menu of items for selection. I still keep it very simple though and steam or poach most everything I cook. The Whole 30 Diet seems good if people need plans, schedules, checklists and programs. Another thing to check out is the Weston A. Price Foundation and the Wise Traditions way of eating.

Tim says, “ In the last six weeks, I have cut from about 180 lbs. to 165 lbs., while adding about 10 lbs. of muscle, which means I’ve lost about 25 lbs. of fat.”
I find the 10 lbs. of muscle claim hard to believe.

EVOO is my primary fat intake. I combine Tim Ferris menu with IIFYM. Everything gets thrown in the juicer like Jack Lalanne. I eat alot of medicinal greens & citris like dill, parsley & grapefruit to detox. Those are my morning smoothie menu. I get a daily dose of apigenin, kaempferol & naringin in one shot.
