Talk about "Shit Happens"!
I was scratched by a cat on my shin on Friday afternoon, and the wound was somewhat deep. I held paper towels up against it to staunch the bleeding, and then put a bandaid on it. Saturday morning, my calf was throbbing. My wife said this isn't anything to fool with and she drove me to Emergency. By the time I got into Emergency my calf felt like it was on fire and I broke out into severe chills and fever. I was hooked up with an IV and they started pumping anti-biotics into me and they took some blood for lab work. I thought I'd be there a few hours and then released. Not so. They said they were going to keep me over night and transferred me to a room.
In the evening, my doctor showed up, and I said "Doc".....no I didn't. That was an inside joke.
Anyway, my doctor told me that I am a very sick person. He said that I will be there for a few days and that they were going to have to treat me with several different types of anti-biotics, steroids, and whatever else. This septic infection produced other side effects, like my oxygen level, and I had to be hooked up to oxygen, and I had developed a cough. A cat scan was done and I had a bit of pneumonia. So, form Saturday through this morning, I was being poked and vitals checked and IV hooked up every couple of hours, day and night. By yesterday afternoon I was coming out of it, and then this morning, as I was having breakfast, my doctor came in, and after saying hello, I asked, "Can I go home today?", and my doctor said "Yes". He has set up an appointment for me to see him next week, preceded by lab work.
One thing that was good about this is that I received some real TLC from some very beautiful nurses. I had one very sweet, beautiful nurse who told me that she would be working in ICU the next day, but that she would drop in to see how I was doing before she left for the day. She did so and gave me a hug. (*boing!*). The equally sweet and beautiful nurse who took over for her that day told me that the other nurse told her that she was jealous of her. I know. I know......JP. But it's true.
So, anyway, I am now alive and well, thanks to the miracle of modern medicine. A century ago, I would have died. All because a cat scratched me.
