I recall that Pierini has a video inspired by Dr Len's Longstrength protocol . He combined squats with pull ups using a pull up bar at shoulder level( a great example of panaerobics with a strength component) .
In any case, I slather with a anticipation for the chance at reading more of Dr Len's wisdom.

Last evening, I was watching the movie "Yesterday" -the one where a young musician woke up from a coma/worldwide blackout to discover he was the only one alive who remembered the Beatles songs. It put me to thinking that I'm in a similar position ; I may be the sole heir to Dr. Len Schwartz' genius level,339 page unpublished BOOK on his ISOTONOMETRIC system, titled " ISO: Total Fitness Without Extra Equipment"(1996). Yes, there was a poorly distributed Time-Life video that offered a very limited,watered down intro to the system (even Dr.Schwartz was not thrilled with this lame vid), but Dr.Len's inimitable writing style,specific details of application, and depth of explanation were sadly missing. I was extremely fortunate in that I lived close to my dear, departed friend,and was in on the original development of his moving isos, as well as shared many experiences & experiments, over numerous spirited telephone conversations. Indeed, I may have been the original test guinea pig, having employed these moves from the beginning, added to them, and found considerable success with use in my long career in competitive weightlifting ,band work, and standard isos/power rack maneuvers. Thanks to this site and one hard training ,dedicated member who has become a good friend (and the only guy onboard with whom I've shown the Schwartz book ), it may be a good time to begin sharing Dr. Schwartz' absolute brilliance with those here,who exude such dedication to bands & isos, if there is sufficient interest! (oh, the All-Round mention in the title, is my "moving iso" exercise tactics drawn from the past 30 years of USAWA competition). Okay.... Let's look at the associations...PrackJohn...use the name John...mention USAWA....connection John Mckean...well known friend of Len's....why Prack...if it is truly John Mckean why not use your name proper? You stated "Thanks to this site and one hard training ,dedicated member who has become a good friend" why not identify said friend....or if said friend has the courage confirm said statement " (and the only guy onboard with whom I've shown the Schwartz book )" It would be nice if it is true, but why tease about it...as Mr. Potatohead stated why not have talked to Len's daughters and get permission and just post in the manual section or in the forum?

HHenthusiast, Well, you've done a good job of tracking my name down! "Prack", just stands for power rack (which training I wrote of in the USAWA newsletter,Hardgainer,MILO,etc), and it just seems right on forums to have a unique user name (notice that YOUR real name isn't mentioned!!). Didn't feel any of this was a tease ,and still have to track down Dr.Schwartz daughters (where ever they are) to make sure they are OK with the inclusion of his book here. Train hard in the meantime! I too was friends with Len and spoke and emailed with him for several years...yes I too did not use my name proper...I know you were friends with Len...so the associate was immediate to me.
Len's daughter are alive and well, still live in PA....sent one of them your post and they immediately thought of you as well.

John -HHenthuse - Glad to meet you,in this manner,as a fellow disciple of Dr. Schwartz' great work. Yes, I still have his Pan-x device downstairs in my garage gym ! Used it a lot in my exploration of Longstrength, particularly as GruntBrain above discusses - "squat-pulls" as a terrific warmup for lifting! One thing for sure was that Dr.Len was extremely generous with both his considerable knowledge and his amazing devices! Gee, I really miss the guy and his wise and welcomed mentoring !Of course,as he & I began discussing his "Isotonometrics", both of us went more with that amazing exercise style over his earlier methods (tho we both still enjoyed HH "Shadowboxing"-another unpublished book he gave me!). I'll strive to get permission to post "isotonometrics", as my old pal,Dr.Len, put so much research time (unlike today's "Trainers",Schwartz conducted serious scientific testing on everything he wrote!) ,thought, and self experimenting into it that he deserves considerable acknowledgement from physical culturists everywhere!

I'm a minor league level Heavy Hands fitness dude but it doesn't get enough rotation in my training mix. I power read Dr. Schwartz book and found his writing style hard for me to follow. Don't know why, but I did. I still hold on to a pair of 5-lbs. dumbbells for those special occasions when I take my patented 7-movement medley for a workout drive. "Patented 7" Movement Medley"? Where? I no see it senor?

This would be most epic..I would be willing to pay for this knowledge or material, if it were ever marketed.
I have most if not all the isotonometrics articles from the forum he used to have where he personally answered questions..I made a book of all that Q/A..I always enjoy the personal results and findings from practicioners
To help understand Lens Iso system and enhance it...I combined his heavyhands excercise methods and techniques...along with charles atlas dynamic tension excercises and course reconmendations..then The synergetics training system.
I have created a alchemy of fitness programs and ideas garnerd thru the years..but panaerobics has been the most logical and functional
I can attest to the particular all around benefiets of the handclasps and handtrails techniques..And ive added my own ways and little tweaks..I think would make len proud..to squeeze more muscle activation and range of motion for muscle contraction..I do say though I do other freehand methods like KSHD and high volume push ups..matt furey stuff..etc...
Isotonometrics make me feel the most complete and functional..athletic flexible and animalisticaly strong..when I do it in public or use to...people cant comprehend the effects of it sight on seen..it looks at the surface..wimpy and soft..but I think its a superior way to train...I think Len is kinda the bruce lee of fitness and his HH and Iso system is the jeet kun do

Zeng, I enjoyed your note - you actually have a good handle on employing Dr.Schwartz isos, in that in his book he URGED trainees to develop their own unique stategies!! You,have obviously done a very good job! Hopefully I'll soon be able to get the massive Dr.Len Iso book posted on this site. But following is a version of a short article I once did,using my own ideas from the book,with,then, Dr.Len's assistance (photos didn't take, but any of these WW2 hand strikes -chin jab,axe hand,face smash,etc are readily available online. Iso-Defensives ( ID) John McKean
Due to the level of excitement generated when I recently taught protective tactics to airline personnel around the country, many participants have expressed interest in continued self training despite having to work around a great deal of travel. As an instructor of WW2 hand-to-hand manuevers, I’ve developed a perfect supplementary training system that not only teaches the important motor skills of these highly evolved hand strikes, but also offers a combined aerobic/anaerobic training system of the highest order. Based on the extensive, well-tested work of exercise pioneer Dr. Len Schwartz (author of the immensely popular HEAVYHANDS), this non-equipment method simultaneously develops strength, endurance, and flexibility in a simple 15-20 minute daily training regimen. For those so motivated, this mode of exercise solves all fitness needs without any requirement to ever visit a gym or perform outdoor activities within unfamiliar locales. Although nothing replaces actual striking, with its required snap and speed, on a spar mannequin, the “Iso-Defensives” workout aids greatly in developing proper balance, timing, and explosive power. Very importantly, regarding actual hand to hand tactics, our ISO procedures educates the TOTAL BODY to deliver maximum striking force through coordination of major muscle groups. Toward the delivery end, this high repetition exercise perfects ideal body, arm, and hand positioning. And, hopefully, during the time involved a trainee will practice the all-important VISUALIZATION of deploying the techniques during actual situations. Dr. Schwartz’s revolutionary “moving isometric” system is very adaptable to the five hand strikes as taught in our ID airline & home security (very close quarters situations) program. One merely has to strike in perfect form with one hand while resisting with the other. Tension and speed can, and should, be varied. Of course, as taught in my seminars, a trainee must learn to thrust the entire body into each strike, generating from the hips and even pushing off the toes. All five movements should be performed in a stationary position and also while advancing. Let’s now consider the performance mode of each strike. First is the “shot put jab.” Starting at center of chest position as in the first photo, one hand checks the speed of the second while a slightly leaning back upper body rocks forward. The hand, in “tiger claw” configuration, propels forward, not fast-not slow, under a “moving isometric” form of pressure. None-the-less, try to always “jump start” your strike and let it terminate at full strength, only being stopped by the resisting hand. Do several with one hand, then switch, or alternate every strike between right and left. After some moves in-place, advance forward striking with the same hand as the foot advanced. Envision an attacker in front and take out his eyes, nose, and chin in one deft movement!
Next is the “thunder clap”. Make a narrow looping swing (remember space limitations within an aircraft, office,or even a closet!) while providing hand resistance. As in the third and fourth photos turn the body in the direction of the swing, keeping the whole body in alignment. Shift the feet and generate power through the toe on the striking side. This move is best done while standing in place, alternately working from side to side. This is an excellent exercise for the waist, while you imagine popping an assailant’s eardrum!!
The “front hand edge” advances with the forward thrust of one’s upper body and resistance on the key area of the strike (remember any section of the entire forearm bone can hit-I like to place my resisting hand at the base of the throwing hand or even on the wrist area). Don’t forget to begin with the striking hand in a “pledge” position on the chest (and keep the elbow up). This is a wonderful strike to move around a room or through the hallways of a house; I enjoy turning corners, quickly pivoting to face an imaginary bad guy and firing the “weighted hand” into that throat! Look down and keep the head under your chopping hand.
A vertical hand edge is resisted at its bottom. Start with the hand in tight and very near the ear with the elbow up and forward. Chop down and sink the legs to deliver maximum force, and to get good thigh exercise! Picture snapping his collarbone!
A great total body exercise is the devastating forearm/elbow thrust(last photo). Resist near the center, but recall that the entire forearm bone is your weapon. Keep the upper arm/forearm in a rigid “L” position and deliver with a turn of the hips and power generating at the conclusion with the toe. On this blow the opposite foot is advanced in coordination with delivery. Another super maneuver to bounce around within a multi roomed dwelling! You’ll feel, and develop, the upper lat muscles of the back, the sides, hips, and legs all coordinating for delivery of maximum power with this major blow. When this one lands, with your newly acquired strength, a potential mugger is history!
Don’t hesitate to put several of the “Iso-Strikes” together to generate more excitement and your own measure of creativity. Remember, in actual use you never want to rely on just a single blow. Find ways, even in the slower iso mode, to develop flow patterns with various combinations. Also, you can perform this exercise system practically anywhere, even while seated. Keep your mind active during Iso-Defensives, and these maneuvers will quickly become instinctual if ever they’re needed! A word about “ownership.” PLEASE develop your own iso moves, based on need or simply your own instincts, as Dr. Schwartz and I do practically every day! Those in other branches of martial arts can quickly come up with effective, fitness-producing iso applications dictated by their particular hand and foot movements, as can those who participate in almost any sport. Above all, I challenge you to THINK!! “HAND” RULES (Mannequin & Enemy) Speed-snap strike (like cracking a towel) Relaxed power – hand should slightly “bounce” off target to deliver full energy and shocking impact Generate power from mid body (think hips!) Keep elbow up – hand edge and forearm blows Center other hand for follow up strike - launch from position without chambering Do not immediately withdraw striking hand - leave it where damage can be applied Eyes looking downward (watch enemy’s hands) – do not target strikes Maintain close and closer distances - go in to your attack, never back away Tip of tongue on roof of mouth while striking Forward movement and sink legs on impact Visualize actual scenarios – train with intent, ruthlessness, and rage Pre-empt strikes – use verbal action trigger Practice often - strikes should become automatic

Its funny as Im very into ww2 combatives for the street..I watch and pratcice and visually practice..the material of fairbanks, carl cestari and John mcsweeney..I think you cant get more direct than those combatives
I love the combatives fusion with the Isotonometrics principles..I have read some of your articles as well during my aquirement of heavyhand material...and for a powerlifter to reconmend and understand this stuff says volumes..I have shown this stuff to savy weight lifters or supposed fitness buffs..but its like im a alien to them its so simple and biomechanically and kinetically sound of a application its makes too much logical sense for some I reckon.
Will you be able to or direct a place to see the ISO defensives in pictures or videos...Im good at creating but Im also a purist I like to see the originator of concepts in. Action Though I am a practicionor of some of those strikes...but you never know what new may be gleamed
Also its intresting if you can elaborate more on Dr.lens balance of doing heavy hands vs. His Isotonometrics..I got a hint from your post he was doing Isos more heavily than the heavyhands with weights
The dynamic always intrigued me...though the whole philosophy is of longstrength and panaearobics and using much muscle as possible...I gravitiate more towrd the iso system..due to its more precise and freeflowing nature...but sometimes wonder if you lose something by not pumping the heavyhands weights...Ive only done heavy hands spoardically through the years..and it does feel good as well...but ive favored the Iso system more objectivly....I will say this I believe combined there are suprior to there sum of parts
I also have the Timelife video...even if its watered down...even when im creating or enhancing my own moves...it seems the handclasps he presented there are hard to beat..I can only imagine the books impartment of instruction
At first glance the isosystem seemed to be a supplement to the heavyhands..but its fair to gather even more so now Len may have viewed or created it as a next step prehaps I dont know..its all so very fascinating

Zeng, It's so great that you're so "in" to the Schwartz system -it's for guys like you that I have this strong desire to get out that iso book (free!!) ,as I often urged Dr Len to publish, but he never seemed completely satisfied with his own writing (can't figure this out, as the book left me totally inspired!!). I noted that my best lifting,titles, and records in All-Round lifting (including 9 IAWA world titles and still possessing 334 USAWA National records) came during the period when I employed Doc's advice on moving isos (mostly for warm-up). And,yes, Dr.Len EVOLVED to using mostly the isos (as sort of a finality to his long experimentation), but he & I agreed that Heavyhands "shadowboxing" should always be included in the workout for its liveliness and energy encouragement. But I was rereading a section of the iso book last night, where he credits his iso program for actually upping his strength to enable him,past 80, to doing a daily 35 perfect chinups with his legs extended out in an "L" position (talk about an ab/arm/lat combo!)! As to combatives, just resisting any strike is an automatic "hand clasp", tho I'll try to restore the photos on that article somehow ; but a really great new ebook on the Fairbairn method is "Light, Wind, and Motion" by Barry Drennan (he may be the Dr.Schwartz of Fairbairn Combatives!!)at : Fairbairn H2H Protocol.com ( I wrote the foreword to this very complete book!!). Eureka! you sir have confirmed many of instinctual thoughts on the strength enhancement possible on the isosystem...For me as well it feels like a final total body fitness solution..that requires nothing outside yourself..but the results are just as comparable to a apparatus user..in terms of all over effects
You have some impressive titles and lifts...Its very impressive how even for you and proves handfree methods can give a edge to someone with already massive strength and power..I know the system doesnt give the ability to get powerlifter strong...but its supplemantary strength it gives is more than average man would ever need
Yes I shall check out the fairbains ebook as well..and I have watched the H2H videos on youtube...he gives some very potent mental conditioning and philosophy as well as demostrations of the moves..
Heavy hands shadow boxing is like the swiss army knife of HH system for shure..its the most free form you can get...it. Covers all the principles of it..for short and long levers and the pumping of weights and circular and arching moves..you defiantly get to incorporate all the biomechanics and hand trails
But yes Ive been a staunch supporter and following of Dr.Schwartz for over a decade..His concepts to me are the final word for total fitness and physical preservation using excercise
But I dont know if you have a blog or platform as well in which one can follow the developments of things..but absoilutly behind that book coming out at any measure..or means neccessary!
I think there is a audience for it...theres alot of golden era heavy hands enthusiasts out there still pumping...alot of people dont quite grasp the HH concept...also for the ones that do...dont know of the ISO system...But please keep us here informed of any updates..I highly anticipate its unveiling..and hope it can be protected from plagerizing vultures...cause I think Dr. Schwartz is the only one it feels organic coming from...

Well John your post answered alot of questions and tied up some loose ends.
Its defiantly a enlightening time when these systems and methods can be discussed..They really are that impactful upon ones life for what they bring forth
I really appreaciate all your insight and reconmendations..I think I will experiment with the iso defensives for awhile as well
Enjoy your vacation and be well also..keep the Dr. Schwartz legacy alive..I think your one of the very few who knew him as a friend thats active online..and its really a godsend.
