I can't find a post that I thought I had made, but, before Pete Wagner took down all of his video content, there were some in which he showed the standing/swinging thing. In one of those, he was in a commercial gym, swinging a 45lb weight plate in each hand - the kind with the handle cutout - and he commented that people gave him funny looks because they didn't understand what he was doing ............ which was being kind to his body while building muscle, unlike they who were beating themselves up ("killing it"), doing stunts with weights in the gym. I'm pretty sure the funny looks from the other people in the gym wasn't because he was swinging barbell plates, and more the fact that he looks and sounds like he's F'ckin crazy...

Was it like a kettlbell swing but arms at the sides? It wasn't as violent as KB swings. No hip-driving explosiveness. No explosiveness at all. Just unlocked knee joints and maybe some swaying forward and back as compensation for the weight pedulum. No effort applied to make the swings reach any particular height. At the top, with knees unlocked, the forward/back total movement of the hands is perhaps a foot to a foot and a half, whatever is comfortable. During the dip motion, the arc is larger due to the bobbing down and back up, so I use lighter weight and weights that will not hit my legs. I don't have any of those handled weight plates, but those are ideal since they're slim and make it easy to miss hitting the legs. It's a gentle exercise. Perhaps it simulates the body motion of farmer walk? When a farmer walks with weight in each hand, he doesn't try to make it difficult. I don't remember Pete doing the dipping swing that I do, but he always used moderately heavy weights (the 45# plates or 30# sandbags). When I do the dipping motion, I'm using 10 lb to 15 lb DBs, held near one end, to help avoid the stress and effort to miss hitting my legs during the swings. Although it requires some effort especially for grip, it's also a somewhat relaxing exercise and, as much as possible, I want to avoid adding stress.

Yeah, if how you appear to others is important to you then just follow the bro-crowd, do what they do and don't try anything that is actually different. Be like them. Think like them. Talk like them. That way no one learns anything. High five, bro!

Carrying one bucket seems like more work than carrying two, all out of balance and awkward.

Carrying one bucket seems like more work than carrying two, all out of balance and awkward. I know these as suitcase walks and I do them if I have a few spare minutes. I find them an excellent exercise for the core.

I find them an excellent exercise for the core. Indeed! When newbies start doing loaded exercise, they make significant gains and, IMO, it may be partly because they are somewhat awkward in it. IMO, suitcase carries are, possibly, the best, safe, strength exercise a person can do (thanks to Michael for turning me onto them). Second for strength exercise, I would rate swinging my 110# DIY KB with two-handed grip. When I do suitcase or farmer carries, I am sometimes intentionally awkward, but without going out of control. It shortens the time under tension. Also, I like to waiter carry stones somewhat awkwardly.

I'm a big fan of the type of FUNCTIONAL strength and fitness that I get out of the training that I do utilizing those particular tools.. ***It's not anything about Wagner's choice of exercise, but solely about how he appears in the video's that I've seen of him. He definitely looks like an interesting and somewhat strange kind of dude. Sort of like a jacked homeless person that actually lives in a decently nice house; while rambling on semi incoherently about exercise and other subjects like he may have done a few 'hits' too many ? It doesn't make him a bad person...

Hope no one tears a bicep doing 5 gallon bucket walks. Well, If the unfortunate medical mishap does occur let’s just hope that unlike captainkronos, the unlucky victim is lucky enough to live in a civilized country with readily available and reasonably priced medical accommodations.

...... It doesn't make him a bad person... Of course not. I didn't even consider that you meant he was a "bad person". Sure, he's different, but so is Dr Len Schwartz, Ross Enamait, Matt Schifferle, Jason Gallant, Steve Justa, etc. Same old, same old doesn't move us forward. BTW, ALL strength is functional. No such thing as strength that isn't strong.

When I carried a bucket from the basement of a new building it was wet clay and I carried in front with both arms, up the stairs and across a room to dump from an open area to outside, 40 times. A lot of wheelbarrow hauls full of small stone for the window wells, each house would have about 5 and needed at least 7 loads, uneven ground and many houses. Then wheelbarrow loads of river rock for under high decks. Lots of garbage bin carries on shoulder.
The white pick-up truck was what I used and the nearby house is one of ours, some buildings where other sites . . .
