They hold 42lbs of water and up to 70lbs in sand. Just use a Sharpee to line mark the right levels for weights of whatever you’re using. Much cheaper than db’s and “adjustable”
Also a tip to better hit the bicep during the farmer walk is to turn your palms forward rather than facing your side. This puts a better focused isometric weighted stretch on the bicep

I like your post and agree about the stretched isometric part of loaded farmer and suitcase carries.
RE: the 5 gal buckets You're right about the volume of material that they can hold and the advantage of being quite inexpensive, both of which are good features of DIY tools. My problem with the (round) 5 gal buckets is their girth.
I've carried many 5 gal buckets of various materials as a manual laborer because it was required for the job, but they were, and are, very uncomfortable for me because they'e always banging on my legs unless I can hold them away from my body somehow, which also makes the carry awkward, with more muscle activation and maybe no benefit of isometric stretch .....? I use smaller volume containers, like kitty litter jugs, which don't beat me up, but the disadvantage is the lower capacity.
It would be great to find a cheap container with a sturdy handle that had the capacity of a 5 gal bucket, but would be more ........ uh ....... ergonomic?

A 5 gallon polyethylene jerry can would work, but LOOK at the price! Maybe I can find them cheaper at a military surplus or thrift shop? Or, maybe I can find larger capacity kitty litter jugs? I'm going to check it out.

I also like to do the actual "walk" in a low crouch, like a chimp walk, I even turn my feet out a little in the step, it has a couple of benefits like that. The legs stay under constant tension the lower you crouch, and the "bounce" with the walk hits the bicep a little more too than just a static hold with a completely upright walk. Basically pretend you are a chimp carrying that bucket.

After looking at the Tidy Cat products, the 20# jug looks like it might be larger than the kitty litter jugs I used. I like the handles on the jugs.
Currently, my jugs contain stones used for landscapes. The answer may be as simple as replacing the stones with sand or buying the Tidy Cat 20#ers and filling those with sand.
Thanks for your input, m8s!

You can do the exercise standing in one spot. It's not like the legs are getting much of a workout from the walking anyway.

Those of us with less than stellar grip muss-kills can use alternating arm carries to carry on without resting

Standing with heavy weights in your hands is a bit easier than walking with them though, there must be some benefit of the rocking motion you get from walking with the weights because it seems a lot harder.

Yes. HERE is a post I made about obtaining a farmer type loaded carry effect while staying in one spot, which I learned from Pete Wagner. Another movement I add to that swing is, as the weights go back, I lower myself more into the squat and then, as they swing forward, come back up to the slightly squatted position - it's a simple movement that comes naturally and may be easier to do than to describe ..... there is a Qi Gong arm swinging movement that is like that, but I don't remember its label. This dipping motion can be done on every swing, or skip one or two swings before dipping again. There's no rule on doing or not doing this dipping. It depends on how I want to swing ATM, how much weight I'm swinging and/or what just feels right. Sometimes it is determined by the music I'm listening to.

I can't find a post that I thought I had made, but, before Pete Wagner took down all of his video content, there were some in which he showed the standing/swinging thing. In one of those, he was in a commercial gym, swinging a 45lb weight plate in each hand - the kind with the handle cutout - and he commented that people gave him funny looks because they didn't understand what he was doing ............ which was being kind to his body while building muscle, unlike they who were beating themselves up ("killing it"), doing stunts with weights in the gym.
