I wrote a “scholarly piece” about busted up weightlifter syndrome over ten years ago after I bailed from the Transformetric forum and was knee-deep in my new Olympic weightlifting journey. It was well read and I had many comments.

That is a very good question and blog. Everyone that commented made very good points. Fast40 touched on a point most people overlook, nutrition. I know everyone can sometimes be of different opinions but certain foods for different people can cause problems. I think "Busted up" is not imaginary but the weight part is. In my opinion it's not the tool You use it's how You use it. Everyone here knows that, The Bag Lady never understood, if You don't use common sense and let Your ego/someone else to get in Your way, any thing can bust You up.

Here's the deal with that whole "busted up weightlifter" claim (in my opinion)...

It's a quite correct description in many cases, and aside from poor form it's usually caused by persistently 'chasing weight' aka going too heavy, and also heavily caused by the ego driven habit of chasing PR's aka 'personal records'  *not Puerto Rican's

The old guy in the video above never seemed to 'progress' beyond using weights at his heaviest that some people would consider still in the 'warm up range', so he likely never put a hurtin' on his joints like so many of us did.

But don't get me wrong here, abuse is abuse, and there are going to be lots and lots of people that currently do high rep calisthenics in the same boat as the 'busted up' weightlifters.

Mag, what do you consider high volume in your discussion?

Dragon, the Dad, I believe became busted up with his incredible rep volume doing the Dragan Challenge and taking the world on.

Of course it depends on the particular exercise, 100 reps of toe touches or twists aren't the same thing as 100 pushups when your bodyweight is over 200 pounds. I would say that on a personal basis it's subjectively any amount over and past what's actually needed for a positive and healthy effect while risking injury to the muscles themselves and/or the skeletal structure.

Weights need not bust you up, but they do bust up a lot of fellas that can't let past glories go and keep trying to relive them. Good form, upping the reps or lessening the weight a bit and being sensible will keep you out of trouble. Letting go of some lifts can be good to. Got Doug Brignole's Physics of Resistance Exercise. One of the best books I have on strength training hands down.

The problem is that many guys let their egos determine how much they lift and what lifts they do
Add to that the fact that these guys refuse to acknowledge that they are getting older and that they have to make changes
Common sense and not showing off by trying to prove that you can still keep up with the younger guys goes a long way
Add to that, the "PR" chase, be it Lifting, Isos, Cals etc....what does it prove ?
When I worked in the gym there was a guy in his early 40s who would come in to work out with his teenage son, he was a mess, wraps on his elbows and knees 
He admitted to injuries incurred from lifting when he was younger, yet still wanted to impress everyone with how much he could lift
The guy didn't look fit or healthy, but his ego was alive and well
Whenever he got done working out, he always looked like he was suffering
Instead of growing up, he was still the young stud showing off....and paying for it
