People these days are always looking for that one martial art that will turn them into superman on the streets . People who train BJJ think that they have the best art , some people say it's all about striking , the other thinks that locking up your pinky finger and twisting your wrist will get the job done .
As someone who has been in a shit load of fights in bars , clubs, the streets, prison and attacked with all kinds of weapons i can safely say that the number one thing that is over looked is the mental aspect of confrontation. You can learn all your fancy moves in your safe, clean padded gym but when you are confronted by someone on the street that wants to smash your face in and you feel your fight or flight response get triggered (tunnel vision , fast heart rate, weak legs, confusion) then good luck with twisting the mans pinky finger or setting up an arm bar in a pub full of people .
I personally believe that easy but effective techniques that come natural to us always work best , punch, low kicks, knees, elbows, headbutts, biting . Complex moves are much harder to perform when fight or flight is triggered where as a punch or kick comes naturally so therefore it makes more sense to perfect them moves for self defence .
Here is a video from a man who is from the same parts as me in the Midlands who specialises in this kinda stuff from working as a bouncer and being in hundreds of fights to practicing various martial arts . This man knows his stuff and is well respected in this field !!

Thanks for posting this, I'm going to watch it when I get home. Everything you said definitely makes sense from my experience, good advice.

Baz, Great video!
Around my way, there is no street fighting. Even 12 yr olds have knives, sharpened screw drivers and 'ghost' guns (those where parts are ordered from the inet and they assemble used by local gangs and make kids under age carry them because kids get off with sealed record here for up to 2/3 offenses). Mostly it's a person (even girls) who have something and shoot, hit, or stab with it.
So what do you do then? Carry a weapon yourself? Maybe. But, if you bring a knife or baton to a gun fight you're in trouble AND that gives THEM the ability to say you started it and they were scared and finished it. A few yrs ago an ex army guy (25 yrs old was in a bar and another guy starts calling him out because the guy had been with his girlfriend. They went out into the street and when things start the army guy pulls a gun (for which he has registered it and has a concealed carry permit) and shoots the guy dead saying he was scared for his life and it was self defense as the other guy had buddies around. He got off the murder charge and is free.
I know not all fights are like this, and that there are lots of scuffles, but you never want to be in the situation where somebody has a gun pointed at you.
A lot of stabbings and shootings go on here. People who are afraid and not strong like kids and women use these. A 34 yr old woman was just shot and killed 3 days ago. I Googled her name and found she had been in trouble for assaulting others for over 10 yrs now.
For these reasons I try to stay in shape and shadow box (I did some wrestling, Judo and, amateur boxing back in the day) moves. I don't usually carry, but am ready with my watch (a big cheapo that's weighty with a twistoflex type band to take off fast and use as knucks) and always wear a belt (with a big metal buckle to whip at someone which has a metal protrusion that fits the belthole so I don't fumble to get it off) that I can slip off in a second. For the street I believe in fighting dirty - anything goes and using whatever is around that's not on me. I mostly keep my fingers open (slight bend) for added reach and go for eyes and throat and to block the areas mentioned in the video - head throat and groin.
I totally agree with the mental aspect (although it's not fun to always 'be on the ready' to fight) and ya gotta be fast, keep moving and be able to gauge distance - whether it's keeping distance or closing in.

America is a different ball game as you have the right to carry arms and shoot if the situation calls for it and there is no amount of fighting skill that will get you out of that mess ! The UK has a serious knife problem which has only gotten worse over the past few years and especially in the area which i am from in Birmingham which is occupied by gangs (Burger boys and The Johnsons) . I love that you are prepared and ready to defend yourself if you ever needed to as I'm the same except guns are illegal here so we got to learn to protect ourselves and our loved ones with our bare hands and i think every man should work on keeping in shape to protect himself and his loved ones and especially in these crazy times where violence is a daily occurrence . I'm glad you enjoyed the video mate like i said he has quite a lot of stuff on YouTube and also a cracking book which i own called "watch my back"

I’ve always said running is the best form of self defense. It’s one of the reasons I still run.
Run 200 meters in 35 seconds or less as an older person, and you’re a bad ass. Your mileage may vary.

What an absolute load of bollocks !! So you're telling me if you are out with your wife and kids and some random nut job decides to attack your wife that you are gonna do a Usain Bolt and leave your wife to get the shit beat out of her ?? You are a man why the fuck would you run and not protect yourself and your loved ones ?? It's in our DNA since cavemen times to fight and protect our territory (home, property) and our loved ones . Admitting that you would run away from a fight is absolutely embarrassing no offence mate. I just hope your wife has the balls to protect you both !

The last time the matter of what type of exercise was best for endurance for self defense (which I was skeptical about from real world experience) he advised burpees. Now it's running. Go figure.

baz, all is well so no worries about your honest comments.
I’m 65 years old and have yet to meet this mythical nut job but do believe he exists. Of course, I’d never run and leave my wife or now grandchildren in harms way.
I own an AR-15, a Glock 9 mm single stack pistol, a shot gun and a machete and now live in an open carry state so I feel quite safe.
