Stairway steps may be a viable, safe option especially if handrails are available . Gruntbrain I alternate these with bench step ups every other workout. Works good and feels good on the knees.

I once invested in a Xiser, rather expensive, but very durable. Love it, remarkably the most challenging resistance is the lightest; then the pace goes up. In 2 minutes I really feel my legs. When I bought is I was rather skeptical, but in a few weeks when walking on the streets I felt like my legs got seriously younger. I use it every morning when not hiking or biking.

I officially used my stepper for the first time this morning. I did 7 minutes on it. When I got off of it, I was breathing hard and my legs were wobbly. While using it, my thighs burned. This thing will definitely build thigh muscle. So, I will now use my Easy Glider 4 days a week, and my stepper 3 days a week.

I am not sure about the muscle mass, but certainly, you will get good endurance.

I know this because I can feel it. I think the term, "muscle mass" has taken on a life of its own, as though there is a difference between muscle mass and muscle. In my excursions around the Internet i sometimes come across some newbie asking if something or another will build "Lean Muscle Mass". I suppose "lean" is another category of "muscle mass".

Consider performing some sort of strength test to determine if Stepper workouts that build muscle also build strength . Perhaps the strength test can be done with a Sierra Squat Harness .

I wouldn't call the stepper hard, but it will get you breathing hard. It's a bit like leisurely jogging in place. I gave it a go earlier just to get reaquainted with it, and i know right now I won't be able to keep it up for as long as I can use the glider. Tomorrow I will be using the glider, and then on Friday I will have my first official go on the stepper. I will see how long I can reasonably keep it up. But two things about it - It is easy on your knees and it burns your thighs. It is an effective and sturdy piece of equipment. sorry to bug you again but; when I do heavyhands I march in place lifting my feet up around 12" - is it harder than marching in place like that would you say? Also it is noisy? It works different muscles than marching in place. Mrs BigBruvOfEnglandUK had one when we lived in Spain. I gave it a go one day and was surprised at how good it was. I had been having problems with my right knee for a long time. My balance was a bit off on that leg but using the stepper and without holding onto anything it was one of the things that has helped rehab that knee. (The other things that helped were the leg press and "The Ancient Shoe Exercise" www.drbookspan.com/FitnessLifestyle.html )

It looks like there is another benefit from the stepper. My hips have been stiff and sore. Using my Gazelle Glider for almost two weeks has been aleviating this. After having used the stepper this morning, I have been walking around - doing things - getting more coffee, walking into the living room to tickle my wife, walking over here and picking this up and looking at it, and then setting it back down again, walking outside to see where the cats are - and then it suddenly dawned on me. My hips feel much better than they did this morning before using the stepper. And if what Bruv says is true, and why wouldn't it, then the stepper might also take care of my left iffy knee.
And, Fatjake, you had asked about heavy hands with the stepper. Well, I guess that video up there of John answers your question. You had also asked about noise. There is no noise in the mechanisms, however, there is a bit of a clunk if you go all the way down. I was stopping just short of hitting the bottom. I guess that would make what I did Schizophrenic-Dynamo exercise.
I had started out this morning to try and do ten minutes. I got as far as seven minutes. I am now going to do five minutes on this thing and try to build up to ten minutes over time.
