Donovan, it is an interesting article. It's pretty long so I've been reading bits and pieces of it. One thing I found interesting was what Whiffet mentioned about the steriods being around in the 30's and 40's. I grew up in the 70's so I never knew all the milk, cream and eggs those guys ate, that's crazy.

It's a little disappointing to hear that there's no Indian Joe.

Thanks Donovan. That was an excellent article. Couple of takeaways for me. Many different approaches can work. What is new is old and what is old is new.

Yeah ,was a bit of a shock to read not only were they available but were openly advertised in magazines in the 40s ,makes you wonder about the sudden change of physiques from the sandow era type body. It's always been pht down to better exercise and nutrition knowledge

One thing I've noticed through my years of training, and this goes back to 1974, is how many athletes - bodybuilders/powerlifters - and those in other sports, included ice cream in their diets. I'd read articles where Steve Reeves ate a pint a day, and in his autobiography, Wayne Coleman (Superstar Billy Graham) said whenever he visited Arnold at his apartment, Arnold always served protein shakes made with ice cream and protein powder. At his seminar I saw in 1980, Ray Mentzer said the junk food of choice among many of the competitors was ice cream.

Hmmm. Instead of bro-science 'bodybuilding nutrition', why not eating for health? Longevity? Disease prevention? Sorry to possibly burst some bubbles out there, but, there is no such thing as "bodybuilding nutrition". Unless you're on a super low calorie diet, for example <1000 cal/day, you're going to build some muscle if you're not overtraining. Dr. Ellington Darden puts men on diets with caloric intake as low as 1400 cal/day. They put on LBM while losing bodyfat. Chazz Weaver built muscle/lost bodyfat on a low/medium calorie McDonald's diet (not saying that is necessarily healthy)...and he was over 50 (?) when he did this. Dr. Barry Sears -- the author of the Zone, PhD, etc. -- has written via his research, work with athletes, that you can't 'eat to build muscle' by overconsuming protein, etc. Your muscles will grow via a complex process of hormonal and other biochemical actions. Not "bodybuilding nutrition". Chazz:

Mike Mentzer told me the same thing during one of the sessions that I'd paid for...he also said he enjoyed the occasional gin gimlet, if I recall. But this was off season vs. contest prep.

Spuds, You're citing hard core/severe dieting to get ready for a bodybuilding contest. This also includes water restriction, to reduce that 'layer' of water, between the skin and muscle. the combination of those two actions is perceived as 'stress' by the body -- starvation, water deprivation -- so, cortisol gets released and muscle wasting results. Pretty straightforward. And quite different from what I'm referencing from Darden's clients, for example when they reduce calories and they also increase their water consumption to a gallon (sometimes more) of cold water per day. www.exercisesolution.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/Superhydration.htm

Onions Can Significantly Increase Testosterone Levels
Science...from Iran? Hmmm. Seems a little self-contradictory, especially based on what the Imams and clerics have declared over the last 20 - 30 years. After all, same country whose wiz-bang geniuses stated if you're left handed, you're the spawn of the devil. Lets see the study done on humans.

I always enjoy reading things related to old-time strongmen and bodybuilders , they seemed to make training and nutrition simple and to the point , no calorie counting no bulking and cutting , just eat good quality food and train intensely , pretty much what I've done for years .

"Finish all your vegetables." How many times did we hear that growing up? We all pretty much know what is healthy and what isn't. I don't concern myself with any particular type of diets, I just eat what I know to be healthy throughout the day - proteins, fruits, and vegetables, and I've very gradually eaten less and less, shrinking my stomach. For me, ice cream is the big killer. That will blow my attempts at losing weight faster than anything.

Lets see the study done on humans. I know Russians eat onions like apples. "Correlation does not make causation" And we've got a great onion down here called the Vidalia Onion that are in season early summer which many people eat like an apple, including yours truly. Other than enjoying their taste and stinking up my breath for a while, I never saw those 21" pythons or 500lb bench, .

(I'm lactose intolerant...)
