Yeah the "P" in Barnstaple is pronounced as a "B". Only tourists pronounce the "P"!
Another weird one is Launceston in Cornwall. Many locals pronounce it Lanson rather than Lawn-stun.

I didn't know that ,might stop me looking quite so daft as it's one of the areas i visit and looked at moving to. I know someone who's just moved to Camelford and is getting a very frosty welcome by the locals ,especially in the pub and finding it cold temperature- wise as well. You got a Westcountry twang yet Whifet?

Every now and then on some words I sometimes notice a slight westcountry twang -- but then stop myself!
I've only ever driven through Camelford -- but it looks like a proper locals-only sort of place!
Where I am near Bude lots of people seem to have come from up country to retire.
I still say Lawn-stun, as saying Lan-sun just seems a step too far! I'm guessing the guys in the US probably wonder why Launceston isn't pronounced Lawn-Cess-Tun!

I lived in Aylesbury for many years. Should be pronounced Ales-burry but often pronounced Ellsbree by so many of the people that live in the area. People from outside the area might ask me where I lived and I would say "Ellsbree" and they would often reply with "Oh Ales-burry" as if to correct me, to which I would reply, "Yeah, Ellsbree"

Where I live is another odd one: Widemouth. Non locals call it Wide Mouth, but it is Wid-Muth.

Yeah ,i think he fucked up by moving there. Is Holsworthy a bit more welcoming? Plenty of GILF's for you to choose from. That is how i would pronounce Launceston from the spelling. Gilingham in Dorset is gill as in fish ,not Jill.

Gilingham inĀ Dorset is gill as in fish ,not Jill. It just sounds too forced saying Lanson. I guess if you're into boozing in pubs places may seem unwelcoming. But if you're just hanging out at home you wouldn't notice it. Holsworthy has a friendly vibe. That said my parents went to a local meeting about hospital closures and people were moaning about non-locals moving there. But the people in the shops are super friendly.

I guess the thing with parts of Devon and Cornwall is that they are good places to live as they are not highly populated or over developed. So people get protective. People don't want a big influx of people coming in and changing the whole vibe. The worst thing would be if we had some forced diversity experiment thrust on us. There is a nice balance here with immigration -- just the right level to enhance areas rather than take them over.

Where i am in South Hampshire it has just got so busy ,seems like the planners ,politicians ,builders won't be happy until they've concreted over the whole lot.I know they are developing everywhere but the scale here is huge and horrible ,i really feel the urge to go somewhere a bit quieter before i'm too old to face the move.
Mate is a businessman and not really into boozing ,but expected nice country pubs like we still have here ,got a nice house though.
Personally , i don't really socialize much here ,so no difference if i move. All i really need is somewhere to buy food and spend my time at home or exploring the coast or Dartmoor.Got my eye on a small place in Whitstone at the moment ,nothing much there but near the coast and Holsworthy. Can't sell mine though ,so all a bit of a dream.Do you find it cold there?
I take it you don't frequent the Bay View Inn.
