Lifting heavy as so many do, eventually leads to injuries which eventually cause many to stop exercising altogether I was never into heavy lifting but was very strong due to the physical jobs I held But physical work can take it's toll too.....you don't see many construction guys doing "bull work" into their 40s and beyond That's the young guys job Once again.....common sense should rule and listen to your body should be our guide We usually get a warning that we are overdoing it......the thing is, to listen Beating the hell out of yourself is a sure way to get hurt.....or worse And who wants "death by burpees" on their death certificate ?

I read Olympic and pro wrestler Kurt Angle would only push himself about 2-3 months a year when he was young. The rest of the year was maintenance and the competitive season.

I read Olympic and pro wrestler Kurt Angle would only push himself about 2-3 months a year when he was young. The rest of the year was maintenance and the competitive season. But some people refuse to listen and learn I sometimes think of Dr Ken, he trained like an animal, as the legendary video shows but was it wise, such stress on the body, such intensity. Impressive as hell, inspirational, but with hindsight I think a yiung man's game - if it is even advisable for anyone. The toll on a body, character building for sure, but surely damaging too. Pure speculqtuin, but perhaps Ken would have been better adapting like many of this forum's members - train hard, but not crazy, train lighter, vary it, enjoy making your body work but not killing it. I believe Ken's adopted son, Kevin Tolbert, of the runmoured (and IMO true) 30 rep squats with 600 pounds has said since that he should not have trained so heavy. www.tomfurman.com/strongman-kevin-tolbert/The point is, impressive as all this is, I think it is the wrong thing to do past middle age.

"Die Young, Stay Pretty" - Blondie - They didn't follow their advice and I'm glad. I think Debbie Harry is still a damn fine looking woman.

Those who know their limits and stay within do just fine. Take Jack LaLanne for example, he did fine as an older person challenging himself. He was one among many.
It’s not necessary but some like the challenge. Just because some don’t doesn’t matter. Each dances to their own drummer.
My inspiration to try Olympic weightlifting in my early 50’s came from Dan Takeuchi, an unbelievable elder athlete in his 70’s who competed until he did in his early 80’s.

There are some people who always have to prove something....like it really matters and like someone even cares But, these people will always be looking for an audience to cheer them, and hopefully take their picture

The rich and famous in the music industry like to be his friend as he can write nice things about their music and he's also a really nice bloke and wouldn't hurt a fly. He's never been a show off about who he knows. It's not like he sits down the pub going on about them. He just writes about them and has collaborated on lots of music with them. I keep in contact with him via Facebook. Half of his posts are about the deaths of his wife, mum (I met his mum. She was very sweet) and his dog and the other half are to do with music.

When I worked in the pharmacy at a hoapital, we were required to deliver 25kg bags of salt to the dialysis unit. We would stack many bags on one of those cage on wheels and push it the quarter mile ti the unit. There were a couole of sloped corridors to navigate too. My friend was a bodybuilder, a big 250 pounder with 19 inch arms, one day we loaded 800 kg and he pushed it up the slope. The danger with these heavy , overloaded cages was if they got out of control on a downwards slope, I remember seeing a colleague charging after one that got away.

One little demo I came up with was pressing a box containing plastic bottles of liquid with one hand above m6 head. The bix weighed between 20 and 25kg but it was difficult because of the moving fluid, and having to have a flat hand under the middle of the box, balancing it as you pressed.

One thing I could beat my bodybuilding friend at was a lift where I would pick up a 20kg metal drum of paraffin, it had an uncomfortable metal handle on top and I would pick it up with kne finger. He would try and put it down becauee it wqs painful. He asked me why it didnt hurt me, I said it does, but I do it anyway. Hahaha.
