I didn’t stick with not eating basically whatever I wanted because I enjoyed walking around being muscular and ‘Big’ I’m not going to lie. At about 5’ 11” and 300 pounds with a large bone structure my pants size was still ‘only’ about a 42, so I really don’t look fat. It’s too much weight on the heart etc. though, so this time I’m serious about keeping the weight off. I began walking extra every day, cutting out all processed food and minimizing carbs. Also drinking more water and eating a bit less overall. Works every time 😎 I'm 5'11" at 170lbs right now. I've stayed around that weight since 2008 with no problem. God bless You for looking muscular at 5'11" at that weight and at 57 years old. In 2008 at 225lbs I felt lazy, I could not handle that weight doing the work I do. I looked fat in 2008. I'm hoping You get Your weight down for Your overall health. Years ago when I did tree work I gave up the weights for awhile and settled out at about 235 pounds with lots of strength and stamina doing the job. But then again my job just previous to tree work was raking and wheelbarrowing asphalt and stone all day long with a second job pumping gas at night (I was saving for school), so having just one job seemed like a relief...

I was just being a wind up merchant back then! So your subsequent invite to fly over and spend the weekend with you 'surfing' and 'clubbing' wasn't sincere ?....

Lardy, welcome to the forum, the advice you have received here is excellent, a upperbody push and pull exercise, bodyweight squats, hanging leg raises or ab wheel, covers pretty much all the bases, that’s the cornerstone of my workouts, simple , basic and somewhat minimalistic, walking is excellent, good for the cardio, but also to as well get older, great for heart health, I’ll be 63 in August, and being healthy and injury free is paramount, the diet advice you have received here is great to, enjoy your journey exercising, it’s something you can do for a lifetime.

Thanks Michael, I recently had an out of the blue issue with my left eye called a vitreous detachment, and when I questioned the doc as to a cause he said it's not likely caused by lifting but it's overall probably not a good idea to lift heavy as you age... (HeavyHands here I come ) This happened about a month ago and I've recovered fantastic, right now it's almost as if it never happened. One good thing out of it is I twice received a very comprehensive eye exam and all else is normal, so I'm grateful for that.

I'm glad Your eye issue is good. I'm 5 years in age behind You and I feel really good besides some work soreness some days. I have a torn meniscus in both knees but the orthopedic said I don't need an operation. My knees feel good, I only found out when I had to get my knees drained from a work accident. I was running/walking a little before for cardio but I stopped because I thought I'd be better off not doing it. I tried HeavyHands but I didn't feel I got my heart rate up enough for it to be worthwhile. , plus I thought maybe I might look like the Bag Lady doing it. All I needed was either blue speedos or tight white pants.

What a breath of fresh air this discussion has been unlike the political crap I've been posting to egg everyone on.
I'll call this discussion complete and "perfect" once our AWOL resident expert Parker chimes in with his finishing advice and critique of how what some of you said is absolutely false. Can't wait!
By the way, where is Lardy?

Magnus, I’m glad your eye is doing better, I have had a detached retina in both my eyes, which required emergency surgery on both of them, and both mine came out of the blue too, I had to lay in 2 different positions for 5 days in a row, and it was a pain in the ass, thank god I had a great retina doctor that did my surgeries. You take care.

When I told them what the symptoms were over the phone they said it could be one of two things, and one is a lot worse than the other... During the first visit they were telling me it happens to something like 70% of the population but not everyone gets symptoms (?)...

By the way, where is Lardy? I'm still here, between trying to workout what advice is best regarding diet and having a chuckle at some of the other comments. I started doing some push ups, squats and sit ups, I now need to find a suitable place for bodyweight rows. I'm going to do some isometrics in days between and some stretching, I will continue my 2-6 mile daily walks but might add a rucksack with some weight in it? I don't know. The advice here is great and I'm very thankful for so many responses.

My tip re nutrition is to make your main meals look huge by adding loads of vegetables.
For example my go-to meal is chicken and rice with a good quality tomato based sauce. But if I just had that it’d look very small and unsatisfying. So I cook up a massive pile of cabbage and broccoli and mix it into the chicken and sauce. The meal then looks huge, takes time to eat, and is very satisfying. I’ll pour olive oil over it all. You’ve got to be careful not to go over board with the oil, but I balance that out by lowering the carbs.
I’ll also add a sliced up habanero so it is very spicy.
As was said above, I am lowering carbs but not necessarily what people would call a low carb diet.
There are some good carb alternative out there I enjoy. Cauliflower rice gives you a big pile of what looks like rice, but in fact is sliced up cauliflower. Tastes really good.
