Bruce Congratulations on your weight lost! Small changes can make a big difference. I don't count calories either. I do agree with Texasranger about concentrating on fruits and vegetables. But in the same vein you want some taste. Like a rack of barbecued ribs, for example.

, yeah like a rack of barbecue ribs. Actually barbecue in moderation is ok once in awhile. But who can resist well cooked barbecue.

But who can resist well cooked barbecue. "Not I," said the March Hare.

I'm spoiled with my BBQ...we've got two of the top 5 ranked BBQ restaurants in the state within a 30 mile radius of where we live. But, we limit it to once every few months.

I haven't had alcohol for 2 months now. It makes it so easy to get really lean. I don't know about other people here, but I find if I have a few drinks, I'm also craving a high carb junk snack too. I've got back to my really lean weight without really trying by cutting out booze.

Alcohol apparently's the second worst for fat storage and fructose being #1. Per the book Fat Chance (Robert Lustig, MD), if one were to use 120 calories of alcohol as an example, 96 calories head straight to the liver -- 4x that of glucose -- and begins the process of cell damage as it goes straight to the mitochondria. Alcohol is one of the prime mechanisms for liver inflammation and insulin resistance (hence liver disease). To try to protect the liver, the body has the liver push fat out into the bloodstream and straight to skeletal muscle (more insulin resistance) and the fat (saturated fat) creates more inflammation (heart disease).
Fructose causes the greatest harm (per Ludwig) and also undergoes as biochemical reaction called the Mailard (browning) reaction faster than glucose, for example, which causes cellular damage. "Fructose can fry your lever and cause all the same diseases as does alcohol. We know we must limit our ethanol consumption. But sugar flies under the radar. No wonder Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have the highest rates of type 2 diabetes on the planet. No alcohol, but they're drinking soft drinks like they're going out of style." (pg 125)

When I was young, I loved going to bars - Are you kidding me - young and single in San Francisco??! As such, I did a bit of drinking. After getting married, I'd usually have one or two beers in the evening, or some wine, on occasion. About ten years ago I started getting a pain in my side. After a scan, my doctor told me I have a mass on my liver and that I had to stop drinking. My liver could no longer process alcohol. So I did. At first I'd have an O'Doul's now and then. Especially when barbecuing. Beer and barbecuing went hand in hand. But eventually I stopped getting O'Doul's and haven't drank much since. Once in a blue moon I might have a beer at a gathering, but that's it. I'm very lucky in that I never craved alcohol, so giving it up was easy. I never think, gee, I could go for a beer right about now. I never think about it.

I never think, gee, I could go for a beer right about now. I never think about it. I can't handle alcohol well and haven't drunk in decades. But I do like O'Doule's on a hot summer day. I drink maybe 2 or 3 bottles over the course of a month in the hottest weather. It was hot here this year, but I didn't have any, and it's cooling down now. O'Doule's has a tiny amount of alcohol, 0.4% or so. English muffins, kombucha, and kefir also have a small amount of alcohol, but the tiny amount does not bother me. For those unfamiliar with what we in America call "English muffins," this is a cross between what the British call "American muffin" and a crumpet.

I was a bouncer and bartender during college -- that was one of the first places where I saw what more than a few drinks turned people into. These days, I'll have one or two glasses of a wine during special occasions or when out with good friends, but, it has to be something worth the calories. If our team (at work) wants to go to a bar, if I have alcohol I will get a neat tequila in a chilled glass, load it up with lime juice and sip it. Got the idea from Robb Wolf as I'm trying to be careful with gluten and as I don't like tequila, I have no incentive to have more than one. Most times, I'll get a club soda w/ limes and give the waiter or waitress a big tip. Recently, I heard Tony Horton (a great motivational speaker if you haven't heard his stuff) say during a podcast say he doesn't drink anymore. Why? No appeal or attraction and he can have a good or better time without alcohol or the calories. Based on the talks I've seen, I'd have to agree he probably does.

Well I haven't had a drink in about 25 years or so, the only time I have used Brandy is on the odd occasion, when I have had the flu and then it is added to a cup of coffee.

Late night/bedtime snacks: graham crackers and milk, cereal with honey. If I was trying to get fat I would probably do something like that.

well now that we have been informed that fruit and vegetables are worse for you than alcohol, I'm just going to get drunk instead of eating my 5 a day!
