Thanks for sharing Michael. I remember watching the Jack LaLanne show on our black and white television as a kid and even following along with the exercises. Remember his white dog named Happy and how he would sing “Happily we exercise . . . “ closing song at the end of the show.
My Dad met him at Ed Yarick’s Gym in Oakland in the early 1859’s. That gym was the place to be in the early 1950’s if you were into weightlifting and muscle and fitness.
I also remember the news when he was arrested for the DUI.
A great man with a strong character and full of life. His brother lived longer than him and without the fitness lifestyle so maybe there were strong genetics at play contributing to his long life.

I continue to use his one-liners :
Are you married or happy?
A pretty woman is like a malady

He sent me an autographed picture and book for my 40th birthday when I told him I did deadlifts for 40 reps with 225 pounds. I can't remember how we got in touch, but a week after our conversation his secretary called and said Jack wanted my address. A few days later the pic and book arrived. Still have the picture, although the sharpy-inscription smeared and rubbed off years ago.
My mom used to do his television workouts every morning.

I have a book in my collection titled Dynastride which was authored by Elaine LaLanne with some heavy contributions from Jack. They did it late in Jack's career and it's basically a walking program book with some progressions and a few supplemental exercises thrown in. My favorite part of the book though is in Chapter 3 where shoes, clothing and other walking equipment are discussed and they advise to carry a telescoping car antenna obtained cheaply from a junkyard as a light handy deterrent against pesky dogs or muggers.

That was fun. I also remember seeing Jack Lalanne on black and white TV when I was a kid.

He was probably one of the first (if not the first) to do the finger tip superhero/cliffhanger type push-up.

I remember the car antenna advice.
Anyone remember Bob Cummings? I remember other TV fitness people, some performed live, but only at the local station. Is it for sure that Jack was first?

Jack was quite a character, full of vitality and contagious positivity. I am going to do my pushups.

My Uncle told me when I was a kid to break off someone's antenna and whoop them with it if I had to. I wonder if Uncle Wallet came up with this first?

Jack LaLanne came up with the phrase, "Your waistline is your lifeline," and then lo and behold, two or three years ago the long-haired fitness nobody on that other forum started including it in his posts whenever he bragged about his alleged "28-inch ripped waist." However, one of the stalwarts on AMM II managed to contact the old fellah about his procuring that phrase as his own, and what sense of decency he had left must have prevailed because he hasn't used it since.

OK, but what I'm wondering is, if Jack's was the first fitness show in the nation to appear on TV? I know, it's just trivia, but it doesn't require much thought and I needed a break from the drama around me.

When I was a kid, I broke the antenna off the car. When dad asked me why I told him how my brother and I were having a sword fight and I needed a sword. Dad laughed so hard he couldn’t even whoop me.
