You know Bruce you gave me an idea. The face hook or cheek rip or mouth hook can be a very very effective self defense maneuver. The only danger is getting your fingers bitten off. Can you imagine sticking your hook in there and then ripping. Wow. And if police come around you can say it is just my exercise equipment. And don't get me started on a heavy duty strap with handles. What a perfect industrial choker This combo could take down any bad actor. Add in a latex tubing snap blast to the eye and it is all over OMG! Soon you'll have to be licensed to own The Hook! Barf! Getting a bit carried away with this "sorry" stuff. Hold on there Kansas Cowboy Bruce, I was going to have you scrub my feat as an act of repentance. I've got some killer toe nails from years of abuse from running and karate. I want you to spit shine them like you did your boots when you were a jughead in the Marines. I think all the white boys need to take a lesson from the late Godfather of Soul James Brown, steal his song and create their own parody version of "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" with "Say it Right, I'm White and I'm Bright" and create their own militia named the White Panthers. By the way, I saw the Godfather of Soul in concert at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium when I was probably 13-14 years old. And in other trivia, my Dad was a cab driver and drove James Brown to his private jet at the airport after a concert. Mr. Brown asked my Dad if he wanted to see his private jet which was painted jet black. My Dad took a tour and said James gave him a $100 tip which was a lot of money in those days.

I'd opt for a knife any day. Having lived in Baltimore and San Francisco, I have carried a knife since I was in my early twenties. I've had to pull it out on three separate occasions, and each time it was a deterrent. I agree 1000%... I own all kinds of knives, and don't go out in public without at least 2 spring assist knives on me. I also sometimes carry a collapsible baton and wear steel toe boots when working in crappy neighborhoods. Thank goodness I've never had to use any weapons, must be my nice guy face and demeanor is enough of a deterrent

In the UK things are very strict. We can’t go out with self defence weapons or else we risk going to prison if caught.

We are expected to defend ourselves against armed criminals only using our fists. Crazy.

I was repeatedly stopped, verbally and physically threatened and eventually mugged in a McDonald’s by police. I complained to the ombudsman and it was upheld. The officers reprimanded. I then bought one of those umbrellas. The area is notorious for various types of police harassment

I don't own any guns or rifles. Didn't grow up in a family that did. My experience is limited to being in the Army and learning how to use an M-16 and an M-50 machine gun. In the Army, they're called weapons. I remember the drill sergeants getting all pissed off if a private in basic training called it a gun. That was a guaranteed drop down and give me 25 pushups. I toy with the idea of getting a gun but it's a commitment to going to the shooting range and training to become skilled in its use. And, to know the law about using it without ending up with a fat legal bill and crime charge. I do own a knife that someone gave me but seldom carry it with me. I guess in the sheltered life in which I live, I don't feel the need for it. Ditto about having the skills to use it and not have it become the weapon that someone takes away from you to use on you. I suppose I have more confidence in my fists than a knife because a thug can't grab my fists and feet and use them against me like he/she could with a knife. Generally, I avoid places and situations placing me at higher risk. And, I'm not a pretty boy wearing gold jewelry where a thug would consider me a prized target. The money in my wallet and credit cards can easily be replaced. I drive a clunker so nobody in their right mind would want to steal my car. If they did, I'd buy another one. In the larger-than-life scheme of things, losing $10,000 or more of assets isn't a big deal for me. My car is probably worth $3,000 on a bright sunny day. Years ago when I trained in karate, I had some clients share with me that they'd like to get into it also to improve their chances of defending themselves in a bad situation. They asked for my opinion. I told them they'd get a better bang for their money and faster by being physically fit, top notch, and learning how to run and run fast. The learning curve of being able to use martial arts to defend yourself is a long one and part of the training is honing your reaction skills so that in a situation where a thug jumps in front of you and places you in a dangerous situation that you don't freeze like a deer on a country road about to face a racing car. Ditto for a gun. The freeze factor is a force that has to be overcome whether you're using your fists, feet, knife or a gun. If you can run a bad ass 200 meters or 400 meters, you've got some good self defense skills. Like good old Glen from my elementary school days. pierini-fitness.blogspot.com/search?q=glenI haven't had a haircut since this Coronavirus thing and it has become long so I'm now sporting a greater rough-around-the-edges look. My office is in the midtown part of the city where thugs and homeless frequent in greater numbers. Seeing me on the street walking about, I think that when looking at me their analysis is I'm a low rate of return candidate for attack. I even had a homeless person come up to me and tell me, "Hey man, it's going to be OK, life gets better." I'm going to go the rest of the year without getting a haircut and keep on doing my burpees and running to keep my self-defense skills in peak condition.

Those knives are so inexpensive on those websites I posted that I got several, thinking that at least one would be ideal. As it turns out, three of them are ideal. I found that rubber is the best handle material for that all important grip. The knife I carried years ago, which I pulled out on those three occasions, was a Buck locking folder. pierini........... Do you also wear shabby, stained clothing? Denis............. Where do you live? Why would the cops single you out to harass?

www.wsws.org/en/articles/2005/03/stat-m09.htmlthey were camped and cruising the area right outside my house. i used to go for walks round there and out in the bush. They always seemed to be there when i was. But the McDonalds incident was two suburbs away. They actually followed me all the way from my house. it was a mystery. My house was the only one in the area that hadn't been robbed

Whifett, Have a comfortable for your palm a metal lock in your pocket. It works great as a brass knuckle or like a “flail” in combination with a belt. It is legal to have any lock in your pocket. I always had one when I attended bad places in my youth.
P.S. Now when I became old, I just take a good cane during my trips. There are a lot of tricks how to use it. I took one cane two years ago when we attended Europe. At least, it helped my wife during long walking.

Isn't it disgraceful and an indictment on our "civilized" societies when one feels the need to carry weapons for their own safety, either actual or improvised, when going out into public areas.
The problem is compounded when one can never be completely sure that he/she is safe from the police as well.
