At 17 I was 6'3" and 155 lbs...had been doing the CA course for almost seven months and gotten a little bigger...started lifting weights during the summer at a local college's gym and gained 8 pounds in six weeks, after school started had to quit lifting weights...went back to CA and pretty much lost all the weight I'd gained over the summer...

I was five feet tall and about eight stone soaking wet and fully clothed and because of extreme bullying in school I decided to try and do something about it.
It didn't stop the bullying by the way but I still enjoyed the journey.

Rehabbing myself from a very serious motorcycle accident and just stuck with it after that.

I was also skinny as a rail. Honestly, the reason I started was to attract girls.

I think I had an interest in old bareknuckle boxers and then from there got an interest in Victorian strongmen and that sort of thing. I don't take it as seriously now I'm an adult but I suppose I'm still trying out "feats of strength" of one kind or another fairly often.

Wanted to become a FDNY Fireman and had to take the toughest physical qualifying test ever given by the FDNY Left my oil refinery roustabout job in CA to move back to NYC for this You not only had to pass, but it was a "competitive" test and the higher you scored the better your final mark The hardest test events were : A 1 mile run An obstacle course which included an 8 foot wall and a 5 foot wall A 120 lb canvas dummy lift and carry upstairs, down a hallway and back down to the starting point A 2 minute hang in the top of a pullup position and you were scored until your arms straightened out Fail any of these main events and you were done ! And other events as well Competition was very stiff as about 15,000 people took the test I trained very hard running and training in the snow and ice of a tough winter and was rewarded by scoring high enough to be appointed to the 2nd class on the hiring list And just stayed with it after that

My Dad took me to the YMCA when I was about 12 years old and I was able to get into the weight room with him, because of his connections, even though the minimum age was older (16 or 18 can’t remember.). I also listened to his stories of lifting weights and knowing Tommy Kono, Bill Pearl and others from that era. I read Strength and Health magazines front to back cover and, of course, Mac the 97-lb. weakling comic book ads.
Can’t honestly say I did so to attract girls in junior high or high school even though I was considered light, probably 5’7” or 5’8” and 130-145 lbs. from age 14-17 and 5’11” and 161 lbs. as a senior in high school and Army physical size. I did have girlfriends and that seemed to be more a function of looks, who you hung with and going to dances.
One more thing, school PE was a daily class and I thrived there. It had a huge impact on me exercising. Ran track in junior high but not in high school as I got a job to buy my first car. Having a car was a chick magnet for sure.
Great memories - every man who looks in a mirror sees a 16-year-old kid!

I didn't really hit the weights in earnest until I joined the USAF, and I was lucky enough to find a gym with knowledgeable and accomplished trainers - one guy would place 12th in the Jr Mr America. That first year of training was incredible.
