Now that 2 out of 3 doctors told me that I don't have a hernia, I resumed my training. I won't do any ab exercises for the next 4 weeks and take ibuprofen 2 times a day for 10 days. I also have another doctor's appointment on thursday because I like to hear several opinions. If it gets worse and it turns out that they all were wrong and it was a henia or something else.. then I can at least tell myself that I did everything in my power to prevent it. I hope it's nothing serious but I cannot see why anything harmless would hurt so bad. Anyways, I'm now training again. I didn't train for the last 2 weeks at all. I have to say though It doesn't appear to me like I lost muscle. If anything it got a little bit more, or I just put on more fat. I maintained the same diet and calorie intake during those 2 weeks even though I didn't work out. It must've been a big calorie surplus. Here's a post-workout picture from earlier today.

Now that 2 out of 3 doctors told me that I don't have a hernia, What happened with the third doctor? A hernia is a very evident thing. You either have one or you don't. Any doctor should be able to just touch it and know immediately what it is. Do you have a protrusion on one side or the other of your groin? If so, when you push on it does it feel like it's being "pushed back into place"? If so, it's a hernia.

All three doctors that examined me with my two hernias were in no doubt about their existence. I could see just looking that I had hernias.
What on Earth is going on over there ?

What on Earth is going on over there ? I'm out of ideas, macky. Are you aware of hernias being indicated by dents in the groin area? I thought a hernia there would be a bulge? LINK ...... to post in "Surgery.." thread - which is the beginning of this thread - I think - but, there may be other threads about jrg's hernia or lack thereof that I have missed:

If they cannot even see it with ultrasonic then it's probably not a hernia but something else. Maybe a muscle tear and the dents are scar tissue? I don't know I'm not a doctor, I thought they would tell me what it is! What I am gonna do now is working out everything but my abs and getting more active again i.e. long walks etc. maybe some running after a couple weeks. The ibuprofen works very good. 2 days ago I couldn't even sleep properly because of the pain, now I can barely feel anything unless I'm not careful and put strain on the area. I used to have pain when I touch the area but now I barely feel any pain when I touch the two points. Maybe it's healing after 2 weeks of rest + intake of anti-inflammatory medication?

I'm feeling a lump in there on the left and right side of the groin. This occus especially when I rotate my upper body to the left or right side or when I really stretch my abs i.e. hanging on a pullup bar. When I contract my straight abs it's not very painful.

I carried one without discomfort for ten years, lifting all sorts of heavy telephone equipment, until I felt that it might be time for an op. Just possibly, like....
The point is, that both were quite obvious to external inspection, without any further x-ray or ultra-sound etc.
What is going on when one doctor sez you have a hernia, and two say you haven't, JRG ?

Why are you asking me this? I went to another doctor today and she said it's hernia. so 2 out of 3 surgeons say it's a hernia. Family doc says it's no hernia but he's not an expert on this field I guess. She even used ultrasound. Why does she find something with ultrasound and the other one doesn't find anything at all. I find this very strange BTW, am I the only one who prefers old male doctors over young female doctors? I feel like the old guys have more experience. 2 out of the 3 surgeons I went to were young women. Maybe they don't have much experience? I don't know but someone must be wrong. Otherwise I can't explain the totally contradicting diagnoses

Okay, so are you going to allow a surgeon to cut you open and maybe find no hernia ? Or carry on like I did for years with a hernia that a doctor says is not ?
I was in no pain for all the years the hernia was there but not treated. It was only when the cut became larger and I began to squelch when I moved that I had the bright idea that it might be time to get it sewn up. Very clever some of us, I don't think.
If you are in pain, then something resolute has to be done. You can't afford complications of any sort, hernia or not.

I had surgery to repair a hernia, only it turned out it wasn't after all (the docs were dealing with another issue at same time so reoaired that).
Ironically, years later I got an incisional hernia on the week spit they had created
Later had that and an inguinal hernia fixed with mesh.

Wow I feel for You guys. Never had a hernia. I guess I'm lucky, I've been picking heavy things up for a long while.

An inguinal hernia can happen in a flash, Michael. And it's not something that you can really train to avoid if you're picking heavy things up. I was weight training for years on and off. I scruffed and shackled 2500 sheep a day (tally) in the abattoirs. I had been weightlifting at school for two years while at college.
Heavy lines work including carrying poles and digging into rock in the hills, carrying 40-70lb extension ladders over hilly terrain etc.
I had been back at WT in my garage for about a year or so, deadlifting my main focus, as it was before when I was younger. I popped it when I was only lifting for reps 180lb, a warmup weight for deadlifts (my second set). I was 38.
The hernia on the other side I coughed out when I was 56, after not having lifted heavy for years, my looking after my wife fulltime by then.
