I had the wretched annual training this past week and a buddy of mine brought some magazines in to keep us from falling to sleep listening to the same garbage they've spouted for the past 20 years. Anyway, I see the BJJ mag and I grab it. Low and behold it had an article about bands and that got my attention. I flipped over to it and they started talking about all the great benefits of bands, and they quickly inserted that you can never get as strong or as big with "fitness' bands as you will with barbells, dumbbells, and Kbs, but they are great for giving your body a break from heavy lifting and increasing mobility.
All the exercises were basically mobility and rehab type stuff(which there is nothing wrong with), not exercises that really build strength. This is just something I've noticed for a good while and that nearly all strength training is judged on the basis of if it increases the big 3 or not. I've done the same for years and years and see where me has went wrong for sure! Not saying there is a thing wrong with the big 3, but I swear, I just don't want or am not interested in the least in grinding myself to death anymore. I couldn't stand doing 2 heavy days of grinding barbell lifts along with hardnose grappling. It wore me to the bone.
I've trained this past week with a local young man who just won the IBJJF World Championship No Gi division and we were talking about lifting. He had asked me about a year ago about some stuff on lifting and I showed him a few things. He told me Wednesday night that he had tried lifting and it just wasn't helping his game at all and was making his mobility suffer and he quit. He said he realized after the Worlds that he didn't need to heavy grinding stuff and that just grappling got him strong enough for what he needs. I told him to look into training with bands as I've just started messing around with them.
well, with all that blah,blah,blah...I'm interested to see if the band work really increases my mobility and strength with regards to grappling. I plan on doing more than rehab/rehab stuff though. Plan on working odd angles along with the basic strand pulling exercises along with my rope skipping/HH Shadow boxing/crawling stuff. I'll throw the Kbs in occasionally and maybe a trap bar deadlift once or twice a month but thats about it.

Are You planning this out or just going by intuition? Will You be posting any workouts in the member's workout log forum? Mixing KBs, bands and the other stuff sounds interesting.

Probably intuition at first. I've been at this so long, I like doing what I want to do. I'm pretty lazy about posting logs or anything, but we'll see. ordering my Hooks and bands this morning along with a bullworker and power twister.

see in this video, I look soft and my muscles are soft. My grandfather says I'm built and look just like my great uncle. He was a powerhouse. Pap said when they were roofing in Ohio my great uncle could throw the bundles of shingles onto the roof and stacked them 7 high.

Since the HOOK can accommodate large flat band loops , you can perform "power lifts" with them( no Power Rack required)

There is nothing wrong with not being ripped, I am far from ripped, being ripped for most people is dedication to diet. I do know people including my middle brother who was ripped naturally, but for most people it is following a strict diet.

Mr A posted Fred's video. Here's his Strandpulling forum. He's a MA that uses and teaches bands for MA training and has written an e-book on their use. I used to post there, until the happytappytalk shitheads took it over along with the old Zen (Sierra) forum and some others. HERE is a link to Fatman's Guide To Cable Training book. He mentions The Hook and Bruce on the last couple pages.

Ok; you say you look soft and your muscles are soft...when I did the kind of training you displayed in your video, the same was said of me. I couldn't have cared less. I wanted to be big and strong; a six-pack was not a priority, and neither were cuts and "muscle density" My athletic did not suffer as a result of the extra weight I was carrying, - running did, I guess - but I could still play fast/slow-pitch softball, flag football, basketball, etc and hold my own. I was never called fat, nor did anyone refer to me as such. I liked the way I looked then.
But then I tired of the heavy lifting, and turned my attention to running and eventually marathon, and I lost 100 lbs as part of my effort to be the best I could be.
And then I got injured, so that ended.
Looking back, if I had my choice, I'd want to be closer to the weightlifting physique I had, rather than the ripped - and I was legitimately ripped; six-pack and all - runner's body I eventually attained. That look and feeling of power never let loose of me.

I don't know how to grapple but I went to a couple classes years ago and people said I was real strong when I wasn't strong in the barbell sense at all. I put it down to isometrics, which I'd been doing max effort-style with a fabric belt and also with an ivanko gripper. It seemed to give me the ability just to keep on resisting like if somebody was trying to move my arm round (obviously not actually to resist against a kimura but before it got to that stage).

Jrmeatplow, You're a beast, ! You look pretty muscular to me. You can definitely tell You have worked hard, my hats off to You. Diet is the way to lose weight or body fat. My opinion, certain exercise can facilitate this in conjuntion with diet. Honestly, I don't think You really have far to go and I don't see anything wrong with the way You look now. I don't believe in all the extreme diets that people use. Everyone has to find what works for them and I believe that's best done by experimenting. I have no right to tell You what to do but just know You have a very good foundation to work from.
