While strolling the streets of Santa Monica Blvd, Melrose and some cool neighborhood streets last week, the number of exceptionally fit men and women was impressive. Whether in their 20s or 60s, the shirtless dudes with six- and eight-packs along with ladies displaying the results of their training & diet via jog bra or tops exposing their core was quite a sight.
Here are some of the things I picked up on while chatting with the locals who do hit the local gyms and/or are into fitness:
1. Huge emphasis on clean, healthy eating as you can imagine. Some did IF, most did the five or six meal approach. (The latter is more popular amongst the trainers in Hollywood.) It all worked (and worked well). Bigger emphasis on clean carbs, moderate protein, fresh vegetables and fruit, fats from foods like avocados. Dairy, red meat a non-factor. I only saw one McDonald's where I was staying and it was close to the tourist area.
2. The handful of people that I spoke with said their workouts were closer to P90X and variations vs. traditional weightlifting. More emphasis on compound moves -- DB bench presses alternated with ab work (leg raises, hip thrusters, etc.). Chins with leg raises. Lunge-holds with curls. Most of them start their workout circuits on a treadmill doing a 220 or 440 'sprint' for each circuit. Number of circuits? Max four or five. Reps are 15 - 20 depending on the exercise...the main thing is not to use too much weight so you can maintain form and get through each exercise cycle. (Again, similar to P90X.)
3. Yoga? No. Flexibility training? yes...part of their usual training.
4. Aerobics? It is integrated into their usual workouts, but, they said people walk, bike, run quite a bit.
Crossfit? They didn't have anything positive to say about it. Several said their trainers had backgrounds in gymnastics, fitness, etc., and they shared feedback similar to what we've seen regarding bad form being allowed in CF training/workouts, etc., the rate of injuries, etc.
Bodybuilding? Old school, juicers, not what these people are seeking, not interested in as it doesn't tie into other activities, etc. As some surf, others head out towards Yosemite or the Angeles Mountains, etc., for hiking or mountain biking, they're interested in all around fitness.
Even the Gold's Gym in Hollywood emphasizes more P90X style training vs. bodybuilding...and there are a number of smaller training centers focused on this approach.
