Jackrow Thanks for that. Based on that, I did a little experiment tonight after my workout, and hung from my bar long enough to really feel it. I clocked 91 seconds. Now that time it isn't going to impress anyone, but I decided to continue testing myself 2 or 3 times per week. This morning I weighed 189 pounds at 5'8", so obviously I am not as lithe and lean as certain well known physical culture experts, however since I will be dropping my weight to 180 or less I think that the time hanging will increase as the pounds drop. I am going to use a formula ...(bodyweight plus seconds in hang position equals total score) So tonight my score is 280. Since I am 71 I am not about to try for some record squats or deadlifts, but this seems like a nice safe way to push myself a little bit. Also, I think the older we get the more useful grip strength becomes.

I hang for 3 sets 30 seconds each hang,6 days a week and it helps my shoulders, and I have had 2 major shoulder surgeries on my left shoulder, there is a book out called ShoulderPain the Solution and Prevention by Dr. John M.Kirsch,MD.it's a excellent book and he covers hanging for the shoulders, it's worth the money.

Since hanging has alleged benefits beyond increasing grip strength, perform some of your hangs with grip assistance especially when performing single arm hangs .

One thing I like about hanging is it works more than Your grip. It strengthens Your elbows, benefits Your shoulders, and decompresses Your spine. Hanging was a big part in helping me overcome golfer's elbow and for my back challenges. The book that DDH is talking about, also talks about doing front, side, and rear delt laterals for higher reps, can't remember the amount.

Jackrow...All I can say is thanks again. For the next while I'll be spending lots of time hanging around the bar. (Get it? Hanging....Bar...) I have to explain my jokes so Bruce can get them...he's getting up in years , you know.
Seriously, I'm glad you brought the topic up because I wasn't aware that elbows and shoulders benefit from this. Thank you.

Dead hangs are fine but also include hangs with some of your weight offloaded especially if you're rehabbing - e.g. use a suspension device to perform light intensity strength stretches

That's a good article and some good supportive anecdotals from fellow Canegurus.

Michael are you still doing these stand did the hangs have much impact on your grip strength? Thag, yes they had/have an impact on grip strength. Of course there are other things the should be done for overall grip strength. I was hanging when I did my grip training, but now I hang everyday. I just hang for however long I feel like hanging. I can hang on a bar for a long time if I want to, but it would cut into other things I want to do. So my grip strength has improved even though it was really good from tree work. I fell in love with these hangs first thing in the morning for my lower back.

Thanks Michael, male gymnast on the rings appear to have huge arms and I’ve read hanging from a bar can be good for your back. Glad it’s working for you.

Try the hanging technique of David Carradine, the TV actor from "Kung Fu" series used to do. I understand it's a killer?
