I have found that, for me, anyway, the most effective triceps extension exercise requires no equipment at all. All you need is a wall or a doorway, which is where I prefer doing it. Just stand 18", more or less, from a wall, reach back and place your fists on the wall, lean back, and then push yourself off the wall, keeping your arms locked, for a rep. You can either do reps or do this as an isometric. Not only does this exercise hit your triceps hard, but it also hits the muscles of your back and abs. shenster.angelfire.com/Routine/15_Min.pdf

Furey had this exercise in his long lost Isometric book. You can also use the wall as for "rowing"...same starting positiion but press back through your elbows to raise yourself off the wall. You can progress to doing this on chairs (make sure they're on carpet and won't slip) and eventually the floor. If anyone remembers the old Nautilus "rowing" machine, same general idea. (See below) Diamond pushups always nail my triceps, especially if done slowly/feet up on a chair, if I'm at a hotel where the gym is only a treadmill or stationary bike. Another is the one where you're leaning forward, hands on a countertop, and you're pressing like you're doing a triceps extension with a cable behind your head. The only problem with this one is the exercise offloads pretty badly when you're near the starting/finishing point. Now, I can do these with my TRX and wow, that does the trick. Another's dips between two chairs, elbows tucked in.

For something like that, I usually use a doorway. I have a std 36, a 32 and a 30. The 30 seems suited to what you're describing, but I can't bring my arms as close to my body as I could on a wall, obviously. I can also sink back into the doorway, which can't be done against a wall quite the same way.

Your arms don't have to be close together. I like using a doorway. It's really a powerful exercise, isn't it?

I do several doorway stretches most every day. Forgot to mention it in that other thread. Frankly, I exercise everywhere or anywhere with or without whatever is available. I continue to make it just part of daily movement through the World. WTF do I care what anyone thinks? Feels good.
