He was a national treasure. His Made in Britain and Industrial Age series were excellent. Strangely only one of his series seems to be available on BBC iPlayer.

My Grandfather worked with fred a few times (he was a builder), he said for someone who got on the TV a lot he didn't speak much, liked to be left alone and use his unorthodox ways of bringing them down haha, Fred wouldn't last 5 minutes in this health and safety era, he was a cool guy he even had a go at putting a victorian mine shaft in his back garden

Unfortunately there weren't a lot of the WWII era Vets remaining when I grew up but I did enjoy hearing their stories. Pretty cool what many of them were able to accomplish before the internet was invented.
