I think we all know the answer here: If you are 1. young, 2. have great genetics, 3. lead a care-free life where you can 4. train, 5. eat well, and 6. rest as needed AND are 7. on the 'juice' then you can use the Mike Mentzer 'Heavy Duty style and gain. If not, then limit your intensity.
The CNS part is key and has always been interesting to me. You can stress it out even just by mental worry which is why I was able to understand Bob Hoffman advising the need for mental 'tranquility' in his mags back in the 40's. In short, stress kills - gains as well as causing heart disease and cancers. Controlling the mental is easier said than done though.

Beer,Cigarettes and stress..to me are the trinity of killers and plagues to us. In excessive and accumulating amounts..of course we need a little stress or should say some is unavoidable..only person who can truly be a bodybuilder and follow the blueprint is one one who can soley exist to workout eat and sleep then repeat..bodybuilding is the most narcissistic activity one can do..In my opinion..and it does the exact opposite of that which it champions..health strength and vitality...I speak of the post roided up era..when it was physical culture body building...it accomplished all those things in balance..and you could have a life..as alot of those fitness hacks and healthy habits..were incorporates in your day..in the way you moved and carried yourself..in your comportment..deep breathing..sleeping with fresh air..relaxing..thinking positive..etc...oh how I missed those golden years of lore

I was stating from the videos and the thrust they make of pure hypertrophy.
The old school P.C. (physical culture) is what I try and live by. Building the body inside and out. Exercise, proper nutrition, and rest to be part of my life to make me healthy and strong for the long run. I don't want to be on meds, have operations and am ok with my arms never being 20". I do admire those who have exceeded the normal boundaries of human potential via drugs, but would never want to live that life even if I had the genetics.
Can't buy health.

The folks you mention above can gain with any method.

On the other hand Mike Cola recently posted this. I like what Mike Cola said. He might have said this, but people above 50 years of age probably will have a hard time recovering when going to failure. I don't see the need to go to failure but to each his own. Although I haven't really done it in recent years, a mixture of rep ranges is what I feel is best for me.

Hmm I'd disagree on the age and failure, depending on the level of consistent training done throughout life..it would seem the more well conditioned the harder it would be to reach failure respectively...but I guess by the law of diminishing returns..longer recovery due to higher and longer duration of exertion to reach failure.
But I agree the older one gets..it becomes more maintance and regressed to maintain health and strength by path of least resistance..on average...but I was thinking of jack lallane and Dr. Schwartz...who never really slowed down per se

Of course, what You said is true. Everyone likes different things. But for me personally, I can't afford to train to failure and I find it to be drudgery to do so. I've done it and had to go to work and push myself there. Because I have pushed my limits many times doing my jobs I have no desire to do it with my training sessions. No matter what, after age 50 You're not building much muscle on someone that has years of training unless You're using juice. I don't see anything wrong with doing hypertrophy training when You're older to try to fight muscle loss.
