First off let me say I am a big fan of Iron Mike. That being said and coming from someone who boxed, most boxing gyms especially inner city ones could not afford and did not have the space for weights, hence the reason most (old school) trainers used calisthenics to condition boxers. Also, most good boxers are strong to begin with and bodyweight exercise is totally adequate along with all the boxing training to maintain that strength. The most important thing is being able to FIGHT.

Look no further than Ross Enamait’s great workouts that I’m sure were designed for boxer endurance training.

I trained in a couple of old school boxing gyms in early 70s (around since 50s and not upgraded) They had very rudimentary weights. Mainly old iron barbell sets with plate loading bars and dumbbells. There were a couple of strand sets laying around. And they all had that double pulley machine bolted to the wall attached to separate weight stacks. If I remember right, I swore the cables were ropes and not wire cable. Old slant boards for abs and also ripping medicine balls too with a couple of Indian clubs. Some were just old bowling pins. Usually spread out all over the place. I also remember how bad they smelled. Got great workouts there for sure. And learned how to fight too for sure as a nice bonus. I never fought at the Minnesota Golden Gloves level though like our old friend did.
