I think most people don't do enough farmers walks to get good at them. In my opinion, you should be doing three sets at an absolute minimum. Suppose your target is to manage 5 laps round the space you have, a guideline might be to make sure you manage at least 10 laps total but 15 if you can be bothered.
The final few steps where you are really struggling are a little different from all the others and must be trained for specifically if you want to get good at that, i.e. don't expect to be able to "dig deep" if you've stopped all your sets as soon as things look a little shaky.
Likewise, if you always go all out on set one and then struggle over tiny distances for the remaining sets, you will not get the hang of the "easy" part of the walk. So there seems a little bit of an art in balancing out a rep scheme.
For something like shield/bearhug carries, you need to be a little more careful with the back, so this advice doesn't hold completely.

I find loaded carries work to be very draining. I can think of a couple workouts where I went hog-wild with a carries workout as far as duration goes and I was tanked the next day, not wanting to do a carries workout for a long time.

I do a lot of loaded carries on my jobs. I do enjoy finishing with some kind of carry after a regular training session. I like suitcase carries because they're one of the only carries I feel in my abs and lower back. They always feel good on my lower back. Waiter and rack carries tire my shoulders out but they don't seem to feel like they're doing much for my abs.

I like the alternating arm, single suitcase/farmer carry. The core tensing feels good.
