I have been experimenting, for two weeks so far, with sleeping on solid surface, a yoga mat on floor in particular.
I have read of its numerous benefits for spinal alignment and muscles of back, glutes, and thighs.
It is a popular practice in Japan.
I can say that I've been waking up feeling my back stretched like I had done bar hangs, and my mild neck pain (which comes and goes from previous injury) is no longer there.
Have you ever tried it? And how was your experience ?

Fred has mentioned this and I believe he does it. Every once in awhile I will sleep on my hardwood floor. It has been far and between but because of my back history, that's when I sleep on the floor. It always seems to help when I tweak my lower back. It's only a part of the process that helps to get my lower back feeling good again after the tweak. I have recently bought a good mattress which has been great for my lower back.

I know a stout guy who was reckless with his back growing up, and now suffers a lot of back pain. Every Christmas he travels to Australia to meet relatives, and has to prepare for the long flight by sleeping on the floor for weeks beforehand.

I have slept on carpeted or padded floor many times to ease back pain or, rarely, because I must when there is nowhere else to sleep. It feels good and helpful for a couple hours nap, but I don't care for all night since I roll to sides and stomach while I sleep and the hard surface is uncomfortable on sides or stomach. Plus, going all night on my back without a break can become uncomfortable, waking me up so that I must move or change position. Almost always, I start to sleep on my back when in bed. I like to squirm a bit and push my feet and head away from each other as far as possible to stretch my spine after I have relaxed on the floor.

I have been doing this for years and I think it helps my back.

Might be a little uncomfortable if you don’t have some fat wrap on your hips and back.

Might be a little uncomfortable if you don’t have some fat wrap on your hips and back. True, the first two nights were nightmares, the following 2 days felt like deep tissue massages, afterwards a comfortable sleep, guess the human body can adjust quickly.

Napping on the floor would be a progression to the "real deal"

Gruntdaddy’s idea of sleeping on a hard surface is bedding up with Large Marge and cuddling her with him on top and in his back.

A TV mama with a big wide screen impairs sleep.

I often sleep on hard surface to keep my back muscles flexible. It also prevent neck morning neck stiffness and helps in enjoying deep sleep.

I would rather lie on the floor to watch TV than sit in a chair. It used to annoy my ex "We've paid all that money for a lounge suite and you don't use it!"

Funnily enough, the only time I ever get back trouble is if I lay on my back on the floor for say 10 minutes. Quite a lot of lower back pain and temporary large reduction in mobility. Strange because nothing else bothers my back.

I hate sharing a bed so I often used to sleep on the floor when I was with someone. I liked the idea of it as it seemed like it should be a natural healthy way to sleep. But I just had shitty sleeps and struggled to ever get comfortable. So not for me — even though I gave it a good try.
