I've started hanging a Lifeline chest expander over the door and doing standing crunches. I think there was a guy on here years ago called Dr. Crunch, he was somewhere on the internet anyway, I think that was the move he was also recommending.

I listen to about three minutes of that video, I just couldn't listen anymore. I like when he says lazy, sitting there with his stomach hanging down. I've been doing the planks for many years now as part of my back health program which is a part of Stuart McGill's exercises. I won't go through all the exercises I do in the morning but I'll tell You what I do. I plank on the elbows 15 seconds, then side plank(on elbows) 20 seconds, then plank(elbows) another 15 seconds, then side plank(elbows) on other side 20 seconds. www.tomsguide.com/how-to/plank-exercise-how-long-do-you-need-to-hold-to-work-your-abs "Research professor and spine specialist Stuart McGill, Ph.D. reported to the Telegraph that you only need to hold a plank for 10 seconds to work the core and see results. I could hold it longer if I want to but it feels good and I never have no problems. I'll listen to McGill before I listen to that guy in the video. I still do other stuff for the midsection if I feel like it in my regular training sessions. Or I do something in a stand alone session if I feel like it. Most of what everyone calls for the "core", I do stabilizing, anti rotation, and sometimes ab wheel/stability ball rollouts. Like Billfish said in his first post on this thread," How do they feel to you ? That's what counts....."

The guy in the video said that planks should only be done for 6 seconds so really not a big difference between that guy or McGill's recommendation. I've done planks that went on for several minutes. I think I did 8 or 9 minutes one day but it gave me a headache. I don't normally get headaches as I've only ever had a headache when I've had the flu, done inverted rows or that 8 or 9 minute plank. It bothered me so I never did it again.

If you get up in the plank position, try pushing forward and back on the balls of the feet for reps. To me I can feel the difference in intensity.

I prefer leg raise static holds ala Bruce Lee to planks, mainly because for me it is very difficult to monitor how much the spine is arching when I'm in a plank position, whereas in the Bruce Lee hold, the lower back is either pressed into the floor or it isn't, it's easy to tell. Still like side planks, though.

Planks are like the heart of core exercises they help you strengtheing your abs without hurting your back, unlike sit-ups and crunches, which can be tough on your spine so choose exercise wisely.

I don't think that planks are good. The guy with the current world record, Josef Salek, can hold one for almost 10 hours, and he doesn't even have visible abs, despite being fairly ripped for his age. duckduckgo.com/?q=Josef+Salek&t=ffab&iar=images&iax=images&ia=imagesIt seems to me like the plank is purely an endurance exercise with no aesthetic or practical application.

I have read many articles saying that the regular sit-up and crunches are bad for your back, and should be replaced with planks. Any opinions on this? Feedback appreciated. Exercise and results may differ from person to person. everyone's body is different. Planks are safer and help improve the overall posture of the body. It helps in building strength.

I prefer the fist plank. Seems harder than the palms one plus if you hold at mid point it becomes a bitch to stay on . I'm lighter than this now but the hold still isn't easy.

For me, I find a double kettlebell waiter’s carry, walking or stationary, works my core the best. Here’s my recent 3-minutes effort. Will try again sooner and see if I can go longer.
