The United States of America is in North America. There is also a South America. In 1783, the United States of America became independent from Great Britain with regard to governing themselves. Today is Declaration Day, the day (July 4, 1776) the US formally declared independence from British rule during the early stages of the Revolutionary War. The result of the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 was that the US became independent and free from British rule. Although Canada was allowed to be independent from GB (but not until 1982), Canada continues to be owned by the Queen of England. It seems that US citizens don't care for tyrannical rule and would rather fight than to suffer for 200 years, waiting for a tyrant to decide to let them make their own decisions.

Although mostly true, that is an oversimplification of Canada's political status. It has been a de facto independent country since 1867. Any further steps, including the 1982 Constitution, only solidified and made more explicit what already was a country on its own. And the Queen doesn't actually "own" anything; she's just a ceremonial head of state without any actual powers. Same happens with other former colonies that are now independent like Australia, New Zealand or Bermuda.

I was basing my comment on the History Channel link content I provided so that anyone can read the references and form a perspective: Other info I forgot to mention; There is also a Central America. Canada is a North American country. They may not like it, but Canadians are as "American" as we are geographically. From our media culture and popular use, we have been conditioned to think of US citizens as "Americans", just as our thinking has been manipulated by media in what appears to be every possible way - History Channel included. Very difficult to maintain an open mind, be objective and properly sort things out when we don't even know if what we're basing our opinions on is actually true or not.

Eternal be the memory of oppressed and martyred natives.
Happy holiday for current inhabitants who work towards justice and peace.

Yes, we foreigners have long noticed that you USA citizens always equate the word "America" with "USA". Yes, America is actually the name of a continent, divided into North, Central and South America. And yes, we are as used to it as you guys are. That's why we call you Americans anyway, even though technically anyone from the Americas is an "American". I don't think that's too important. As long as people understand what you mean, words are not that important in my opinion.

I suppose. I'd just rather not assume. Well, some people are annoyed by the fact that people in the USA are so often called simply Americans. That's why very often you're called "estadounidenses" in Spanish, which simply means "from the United States". That's what's most common in the news and mass media, although when talking to each other people simply call you "americanos". At least that's what happens in Spain. I know some people from other countries in the Spanish-speaking Americas take more offense at that. But Spain's in Europe, so what do we know... Many people here also call you "norteamericanos", which means "from North America", but Canadians and Mexicans could take offense at that... and I know for a fact that some Mexicans do. Ain't language a wonderful tool to get annoyed, m8s?🤣🤣

Eternal be the memory of oppressed and martyred natives. Happy holiday for current inhabitants who work towards justice and peace. And a salute to the enslaved Africans who worked in cotton and tobacco. Their work created the basic economic foundation of the new nation. Yes, my fellow Americans, our country has slavery, genocide, and ethnic cleansing as a foundation.

You left out some kind charge of direct misogyny Alan. That's very trendy nowadays. You wouldn't want code pink to make up a Alan OldStudent blimp now would you?

And not only about the US. What he said can perfectly be applied to any country from Western Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Asia, etc. It's human nature. Our beloved and idealized ancient Greeks and Romans based their societies in war, slavery and abuse. It's the very base of civilization, sadly.
