KSHD or co-contraction training is a perfect method to gain muscles, strength, flexibility, mind-body coordination, and speed. This training is also used in martial arts. These video are only few examples:

You can flex your muscles how you want.. without external resistance they don't get anywhere the same impulse to grow. That's factually proven. I don't believe in KSHD at all.

But if you gave it an honest try for a couple months you may change your mind. I'm not saying it will replace your usual training, but it is certainly not a worthless enterprise to try KSHD out.
Bruce Tackett got a lot out of it, if you read his free course, one of the best (if not, THE best course) on KSHD. www.angelfire.com/ny5/shenandoah/OBB/VE.html
You don't always need 'external' resistance to make muscle. Self resistance (e.g. one arm opposing the other) or in the case of KSHD, the opposing muscle (e.g. triceps opposing the biceps in a curl) provides the resistance.

Combination of KSHD (co-contraction exercises) with opposite self resistance can provide good full body training.

When I was JRG's age I would have said the same thing. Sometimes You have to try stuff with an open mind just to see if it has some use for You. I try not to knock someone for their style of training. If it fits You do it no matter what someone else says.

When I researched the old muscle-tensing workouts from the early 1900s I was surprised to discover that the critics of the time all seemed to accept you could develop a decent physique using those methods. By decent they meant a muscular 15 1/2 inch flexed upper arm for a guy of average height -- which I think was around 5'8" back then.

Well, again, it's a matter of doing it. I practiced KSHD for a year and a half. I wouldn't have wasted my time on something that doesn't work. I did include isometrics, so I can't say how effective KSHD alone is. But the bulk of my workouts was KSHD. I included isos because I had a need to feel some real world resistance.

KSHD can make You look muscular but I have to admit I had to get use to it. I've had decent stinks using it. For me it made the body feel really good but when I used it I had some nagging injuries. What Bruce said about needing to feel some real world resistance was similar to what I felt. I gravitated to self-resistance and calisthenics. One of the problems I personally had with KSHD was the loss of the ability to pick up heavy things. I'm sure it would help someone that does nothing at all. Nothing wrong with it but I pick up heavy things everyday. I never said anything to some guys on another forum about their magic claims. Some would claim that their calisthenics numbers would go up 20-30 reps while just doing KSHD for a couple of months. Never believed them because I tested this myself.

What kept me going so long with KSHD was the Zen-like, meditative aspect of it. I had my own, secluded "Zen Spot" that I would go to each day at lunch time - on the edge of a cliff surrounded by forest overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I would do isos on tree limbs and then KSHD, facing the Pacific and breathing in the ocean air.
