A towel is fine but more intense contractions can be done with your favorite looped strap . The towel pulls are grip limiting which of course is a fine way to work the trip .

Of course if gripping a towel is a limiting factor, one can also get the towel wet and then wring it out by hand. Then overtime the grip strength improves and so does the contraction, when using the towel for isometrics. One can even wrap each ends of the towel around the hands and then the contraction will be no problem.

A lot of judoka train with towels to increase grip strength. I do chins and lat pulldowns with them. Deadlifts, kettlebell swings and so on. Also do strand exercises with two smaller towels as handles.
