I prefer press ups to push ups.

Bill Pearl mentioned in his book "Getting Stronger" that one of the best exercises for the chest was the reverse grip bench press, made famous later by Anthony Clark. Thought about this and started doing pushups that way. I grip a dowel so that I am on my knuckles and the dowel, like the barbell bar in the press, touches the lower chest; palms are facing toward the head. You could try doing these on your fists without the dowel but the fists have a tendency to turn, gripping the dowel keeps the form perfect. One of the real advantages of the reverse grip pushup is that it works the chest very well with a shoulder width grip, so there is no unusual stress on the shoulders that I can tell.

Kiss your shoulders goodbye, Mr. Atlas... Most definitely Fred. I drank that Kook Aid in the past. Feet elevated doing these is what made my right shoulder act funny at times. Question for You or anyone. In the past I have done plenty of chest work whether it be benching, flyes, push ups, etc.... I hope this doesn't sound stupid. Is there a way to thin the chest out? I know the obvious answer is diet and lose body fat. But as in my avatar, I've been down to 160 lbs at 5 feet 11 inches. Really being any lower than that makes it hard to do my job.

I listed 30 of the ones I liked years ago from Ron Jones site. Do 5 reps of each for 150 or 10 of each for 300. There is enough variety that you don't feel like you have overdone any one type of pushup. Ron Jones list of pushups

Michael, I'm not sure what you mean by "thin the chest out"...do you mean you want your pectorals smaller and more compact, or do you mean you want to rid the area of fat?

For ages I did What was called at the time, he changes the names all the time, was the Liederman pushups that and the advanced version with feet elevated. Then I did what became my favourite push up, the atlas pushups, hands elevated and feet on the floor. I know, I know.

.... Then I did what became my favourite push up, ..... hands elevated and feet on the floor. Nothing wrong with those. It makes for a nice, partially lowered hold and with slight up/down pulses, too. Another thing is that it can be done anywhere an elevated surface is available - like a bar.

Knuckle press ups, if you do not think your knuckles can handle it, just get a bowl of sand and press turn your fists into it, to toughen the skin up or do them on something soft like a folded up towel.

Hey Thinman
I still think the Flexercise chest workout is one of the best out there.
