Have any of you used them? Do you think they are safe?
Thanks

I had a go with them once. After 5 minutes I was bored and decided they weren't for me.

I saw the price of rope and the amount of space required, and decided they weren't for me.

John Brookfield is an interesting character. Like some old kung fu master, he only gives away small amounts of his training ideas at a time. I'm not sure if he ever expounded his "full" battling ropes system to anyone. He also had a similar system with chains, and a system all about wobbling barrels of water. The last thing I read about him he was establishing routines based around his interpretations of the bible. His workouts have always been very physically and mentally demanding and I bet few people on their own are going to get the kind of results he gets from, for example, waving a rope.

Battle Ropes aside, a thick rope( at least 1.25") can be used as a suspension device and works well as an Isociser .

I've had a bit more of a poke into the battling ropes stuff. It's a weird environment since Brookfield doesn't keep an online presence. www.powerropes.com/brqanda.htmlThe pole system seems to be wrapping the rope round a pole for friction and pulling on it, similar in concept to the exergenie or gruntergenie but on a larger scale. Elsewhere he briefly mentioned his "push-pull strength system" alongside a video of him doing what looked like the pole stuff put with the other arm offering self resistance. The battling ropes stuff was also done in conjunction with a muscular bobsled woman called Ingrid Marcum. I checked her facebook page and she's recently had surgery on both achilles tendons at once, and been doing a lot of hand balancing while unable to actually walk.

I think they are great as part of HIIT circuit training. Develops endurance using the upper body in what would be kind of similar to heavyhands.

I think someone here posted a video one time on how to make battle ropes out of old fire hose. When I use to plant trees we use to have to go around and water them once a week. Since there were so many we had a water truck which we hooked up a piece of old fire hose. You can ask for some old fire hose from a firehouse and make Your own battle rope.

I dunno, I've played around with them a little, but don't see the value. General conditioning can be better had not beating the shit out of tiny deltoid muscles and fragile shoulder joints. Unless the movement is specific to some sport or event you are training for I just don't think the risk reward ratio is in my favor. (I'm talking mostly about the sinusoidal wave movement I see often performed)
On another note, remember those rubber jump ropes filled with sand. When I wrestled they were the big thing for jump rope conditioning. I was a bigger guy and could take a miss and withstand the rope slamming into my legs. The little 98, 105 and other lighter weight classes could not. Missing and having the rope hit them usually up ended them right then and there. It was rather funny.

I have 3/8" link logging chain that I sling and drag around sometimes, but do not really do the "approved" battle rope routine stuff. Don't use it much though and when I do, it's in warm weather.
