The Remarkable Benefits of Cold Water SwimmingHas anybody tried it? A fortnight ago, I spent the last three days without hot water (plumbing problems) and I found it very unpleasant, especially the morning cold shower. I don't mind a cold shower in the summer but not in the height of winter.

I would definitely do that if I had a lake in my area. I'm 100% it has a lot of health benefits as long as you don't over do it. I'm a fan of cold showers too. To be fair though, I only do the cold showers when I'm already pre-heated from a hot shower I did prior to that.

I've only done the plunge once a few years ago, swam a good few yards from shore to a dock and back, that was more than enough for me. I prefer cold showers. They help me sleep better, at least that's the benefit I get.

There's only one reason I'm getting in cold water in the winter I don't care about the health benefits of it personally. Three things I won't do is intentionally starve myself, jump in some cold water, and or try to brave cold weather.

I hope cool air exposure offers sufficient health benefits . At least it's refreshing.

If you live in Canada you can just go outside and roll naked in the snow I bet there's people out there doing that

I've done the hot/cold thing for years, I am convinced it helps to keep you healthy, but it isn't a miracle cure...I am frankly skeptical about it helping depression, and I can never say I felt "elated" after a cold shower, but if those folks are being honest, good for them. Chi kung makes me feel like I can smash through walls and piss lightning, though...

I read somewhere that a hot bath does similar things to the body like a workout. Cardio vascular there's maybe similarities. After a workout you usually feel great because of the endorphines, maybe a hot/cold thing does the same thus helps with depression, fredhutch?
Are you sure? Because that's exactly how I feel after a cold shower!

No, sorry, no elation after a cold shower, it's just another day at the office. But then again, I'm too old to get excited by anything. If those folks feel their depression is helped by this, like I said, that's good for them. I have struggled with depression my entire life, and I know full well how serious and life-threatening a condition it is. There is no cure for it, all you can do is manage it, and it can come back or intensify at any time. Unless you've actually had severe depression, you don't know anything about it. Myself, exercise, martial arts, and chi kung are the things that keep me on an even keel.

I've actually been doing the cold shower thing for about a month. I can't say I've noticed any particular benefit other than it feeling great when it is over and you can warm up.
I read it will keep your hair in better condition but it seems to have made mine feel a bit dry.
I'll keep them going though as I like the feeling of getting out and warming up.
I do go in the cold sea all winter -- albeit in a winter wetsuit. Great for fat loss if you can resist the enormous appetite it gives you.

One benefit I noticed this morning was that I have learned to control the "shock" reflex you get when you turn the shower to cold. I've learned to just relax now and control my body better.

....I can't say I've noticed any particular benefit other than it feeling great when it is over ...... What a coincidence! I've noticed the same thing when I stop hitting myself in the head with this hammer, m8! Frankly, I do go out in mornings (or whenever needed) to feed the critters and do it in any weather, wearing nothing but boxers and a t-shirt. Wakes me right up on the cold ones.
