The wife had a text today from a friend of hers, her friends hubby who is 47 had his back lock up on him on Saturday while getting his weights out to do a workout. He has now been diagnosed with a slipped disc, he has been doing a manual job and working out with weights as well. He did not listen to his wife who kept telling him to take it easy for years, I hope he has now learned his lesson.
P.S. I have contacted the minister and I am eagerly awaiting his reply, on how to heal this guys injury. (rofl)

Yeah, but most people that have back trouble have never worked out a day in their lives. Better to die on your feet than live on your knees...

Mr A sorry to hear that. I already know his answer so he can get a head start. At least 2000 pushups a day and yanking and tugging at one's strap. He should be fine. But he needs to ask the Lord forgiveness for giving in to the temptation of the iron.

There must be thousands, at least, who have manual jobs and who also workout. Not every one of them is going to injure themselves. Bad luck on the part of your friend.

I agree with Bruce, I'm one. I'm not going to go through my story because no one wants to hear that stuff. But believe me, one slipped disc is not the end of the world. I always say ask Your doctor but I personally didn't listen to the doctor on this. He has to do his research and not give up. I hope he feels better.

I've always read that you should consult your physician before starting any exercise program. I called my doctor the other day and told him I'm thinking of touching my toes ten times.

I injured my lower back in 1990, lifting a 5kg piece of computing equipment out of a box on the floor. I was in real pain for several weeks. When it first happened, I found life easier if I had my computer on a box so I could stand up. Lying on the floor was the other thing that helped. This was quite funny, as the boss thought I had gone home when I was lying on the floor behind my desk. It has never really healed and comes back every so often to remind me. It's always doing something innocuous too. I'll dead lift 100 kgs with no problems, but I've managed to have it come back in the following circumstances. - Putting on my jumper
- Putting on my sox
- Picking up a pillow off the floor
- Moving a 5kg weight off a Smith machine bar to the storage rack
- Getting off the train
My work chair seems to be the biggest factor. For a long time I had those chairs you kneel on. There were OK but caused other problems, mostly with my knees. For that last couple of years I've had a Backapp chair at work, and I find it is much better to work on. I've had to put the desk on bricks as the chair is quite high. I also try to stand up as much as I can. If I have to go and visit a classroom, I always go the longest away around the campus. At home, I either sit on a Swiss ball or more usually lie on the floor while watching TV.

Did You ever get the problem diagnosed by a doctor or MRI? Is it a disc or muscular?

I am not saying that someone cannot do both, I do not know the full story, I am only relaying what my wife has told me. I know from my own personal experience to use caution. If I am doing upwards of 250 reps in a shift, I am not going to do any working out, an injury could mean that I am out of work. Been there done that do not want to repeat it, to me money is more important than working out. I cannot pay the bills with curls, deadlifts, bench press, press ups, dips etc etc etc.......................... I know it is a harsh world, but that is the way it is.
