Speaking of effective fighting. Two of my 6th great grandfathers, Dillion Asher and George Sizemore participated in these matches that I know of. Dillion went all the way to North Carolina to fight a man and he was nearly 70 years old. George killed a man named William Twitty in one of these fights. My grandfather called the wrestling they did as kids rough and tumble too. Yes, we are savages here, but not Deliverance movie kind of crap. Thats Hollyweird. I didn't know what a queer was until I saw some in Memphis, Tn and I was 18 years old then! fightland.vice.com/blog/rough-and-tumble-the-deeply-southern-tradition-of-nose-biting-testicle-ripping-and-eye-gouging

Napoleon said he was sad to see dueling go out of style for it had tended to improve men's manners.

There is a book titled Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladies: A Nineteenth-Century Treatise on Boxing, Kicking, Grappling, and Fencing with the Cane and Quarterstaff by Colonel Thomas Hoyle Monstery. Monstery was a professional military adventurer of the mid 19th century that engaged in and survived many a close combat situation or duel. In the part of the book that I got to read about dealing with various hand to hand fighting styles of the era (boxing, wrestling, savate, etc.) Monstery's advice in regards to the rough and tumble style fighters of the southeastern USA was "pull your pistol".

Back when I was a Fireman and we had outdoor collations after line of duty death funerals, sometimes the boys would get a bellyful of beer and the fisticuffs would start They were seperated and dunked headfirst into the tubs of ice and water that cooled the beer Worked great !

I think it was Thomas Jefferson who once said that a gentleman should never go about unarmed.

I think it was Thomas Jefferson who once said that a gentleman should never go about unarmed. No, no , no......that was Andy62 after thoroughly thrashing two stumbling bench pressers in the local bar

Oh. Right. I stand corrected.
Was that before or after he swept a female American Gladiator off her feet? Maybe he regaled her with stories of derring do from the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He swept the gladiator off her feet, and on the way out the door, thrashed those stumbling bench pressers with his mind!
It was a momentous evening.

Then back to his crib where his strategically placed Bullworkers, shrewdly located by our Dashing Don Juan kicked off the scintillating conversation.....perhaps aided by him knocking out a set of pushups , in perfect form.......of course

The poor girl never stood a chance! Well if he had taken Henry's suggestion and had a bath first, his BO would not have knocked her over.
