I went to a gym one day as a guest, that's it. I've always had my own weights when I lifted. I couldn't train with people like that.

I tried to join a few facilities/gyms, but;
1. Thanks to help from the forums and what I'd previously learned, after a brief interview, I seemed to know more than they did - of course, they may not have known I was interviewing them.
2. Some odd odors.
3. Music not under my choice of selection.
4. Machines that ..... oh, who the fuck knows what they were used for?
5. I already had everything I needed at home and if I didn't, I could make it or buy it cheap.
Plus, not using up time and fuel, driving to and from the facility is a bonus.

One thing that gyms have in abundance is bullshit mikey And the machines were a big selling point....the owner would march prospective customers around showing them the machines....and they probably thought the same thing as you

I remember taking a 'class' at one - I think it was a nutrition class that also included a tour of the facility - so, you know, they were doomed from the start. It was entertaining though and the head of the class was cute.

Back home, I go to a gymnasium equipped for both sport gymnastics and old style training with climbing ropes, ladders etc, as well as free weights, fun stuff. I also found a pretty good boxing gym just off the Reeperbahn.

The YMCA basement gym I used to go to had no machines. There were two sets of parallel bars for dips, a pulley for pulldowns, an isometric rack that most used for chins, two squat racks and a bench press set up around a pillar. Swags of free weights lined along the walls, both dumbbells and barbells, an Olympic set, no girls except on one single occasion, that was it.
Of course, that was a while ago.
About 50 years.
