When Len (Dr. Schwartz) was Shadow-Boxing Ala Heavyhands, he would simulate rope jumping with 2 to 3# HH (substitute DB's) also did a move where he with be rope skipping like motion and rotating his arms inward and outward. (His arms woulds be at his side, elbows bent to about 90* and moving both arms to the front as almost touching in front and then rotate them outward to the side away from each other. It is a good strength-Endurance move, maybe you could give it a try!!

I know You mentioned this before Billfish but I like Your opinion. By the way, this is a good thread. I've been more into conditioning workouts lately. I believe You live somewhere where the weather can get cold, icy or snowfall. I workout in my basement where I can do things like pressing, get-ups, and other stuff between the rafters. But I can't jump rope down there. And doing it outside right now is not wise because of the ice, don't feel like busting my You know what. So if I was to do it outside in the grass what would You recommend? Shoes or no shoes in the grass? I'm with you Michael on more conditioning based work. I guess it would be called strength-endurance now a day. I know my body just feels much better doing this type of work rather than the heavy barbell grind stuff anymore. I occasionally stick a barbell workout in here or there, but I just don't seem to get the benefits I'm looking for anymore with that heavy wearing on my nerve training. I want to wake up the next day and feel like I have energy but also feel just to enough from the training to know I did something. I've done 2 band sessions using a curl and press with my life line cable set and my biceps/elbows and shoulders feel super. This evening Dad and I did 10 rounds of 1) curl and press with 2 brown cables 2) straight arm band pushdowns 3) bodyweight rows on rings 4) hindu squats, done in giant set fashion. Followed this up with some isometric holds with the iso-bow and L-Sits. Feel worked by also feel awesome right now. That's great You have Your Dad training with You! I have been a little more intuitive with my training sessions. I do use kettlebells 1 to 3 times a week depending on how I feel. I have one KB complex I like to do once a week which really works my conditioning. But I definitely am not a purist. There has been a lot of good ideas on rope skipping on here. There are times when I do step ups for time, if the weather is bad I use my elliptical, I may go for a run, or I'll do some kind of circuit with stuff like KB swings and bodyweight stuff.

Michael, Here is a good one that I've done in the past. I used 2 20lb dumbbells for the alternate curl and press and I had 10b ankle weights for the step ups. Basically you do 50 alternating curl and presses and then immediately do 50 alternating step ups. Do 10 rounds of this as fast as you can. Its 1000 total reps and its a gut buster.

I also have really heavy hand handles and weights I use too. John McKean turned me on to the shadow boxing with the heavy hands. It got me in one of the best shapes of my life and I'm back on it. And yes, I've used the simulated rope skipping too and it works. I'll tell you another in marching in place with high knees while alternating the press over head. Talk about making you suck wind. Like the 1000 rep workout I shared with Michael above.

Took me forever to get it down too.....I eventually learned by practicing skipping rope in the ring without wearing shoes. I found that I could "feel" the rope with just socks I too skip in socks. I don't do any of the fancy boxer skipping, I just jump up and down. I took it up when my knees told me that running on the treadmill was out of the question. I do it as part of a little circuit; usually 3 or 4 rounds : - Plies or a squat with light dumbbells or a sandbag
- Kettle bell curl to press or db curls
- Three minutes of skipping
- Crunches
The short bursts means my knees get time to rest and I get a bit of cardio. If I have time, I skip for 4 minutes. If has been suggested that I could use a cross trailer, stationary bike or rower to get cardio. I find the trainer an unnatural movement, I fall asleep on the exercise bike and the rower hurts my bum. I enjoy riding my bike on the road in the summer but in the winter I ride on the rollers. You have to concentrate otherwise you'll fall off.

I do jumping cardio -- like skipping but without a rope. It means I can do it indoors. I've got different jump variations I do.

The original HeavyHands book has a bunch of jumping moves. I remember years ago when I bought a 6-pound jumprope and promptly whacked myself in the back of the head with it. Great moments in physical culture...

I go through phases where I work jumping rope into my weekly workouts. I just started it up again. My go to routine is some variant of the following:
Jump rope x 1-2 minutes Set of pushups (mixing up the variations-pikes, diamonds, pseudo planch, dips, side to side, circular, etc) Set of pullups(again mixing the variations)
The push-up and pull-up variations determine how many repps, but I squeeze them in to a similar time frame that I spending jumping rope. So, 1 minute humor rope, one minute to get the pushups and pull-ups in. It doesn’t leave much down time. If I get too winded, I’ll rest for a 1 minute round, but I usually try to push through. When I do this regularly, nothing else I ever do mkes me winded. This current cycle I’ve just started adding a round of a leg exercise in. Squat kicks (I’m a martial artist), circular lunges, squat variations based on martial arts stances, etc. It was pretty brutal. When I jump rope, I try to mix things up a little, too. Double leg hops, cross overs, double unders, lunges, squats, single leg, running in place. It keeps it fun.
Take care, Toby
