Do any of you guys do any rope skipping for aerobic or conditioning work? I was pretty heavy into a year or so ago and just strayed off to who knows where and stopped doing it. Decided to do a skipping, shadow boxing w/sprawls, and crawling for my BJJ conditioning yesterday and it reminded me what a great exercise I had put aside. I started off with the 2lbs weighted rope that I purchased from Crossrope, but it wasn't long until I was grabbing the thin cable speed rope!

I did a lot of heavy bag work, shadow boxing, and rope skipping this past summer. New job hours and temps in the garage (where I have to do these) currently keeping me from doing them. When Spring gets here though, I will start up again after I get home from work (rather than before) till Summer temps preclude that. Rope skipping, done correctly and not overdone of course is a great overall body conditioner that is progressive both in endurance and skills.

I skip rope occasionally.....I used to skip on a regular basis but have gotten lazy lately partly due to the cold, like Deuce I work out in my garage Used to mix skipping with hitting the heavy bag Several years ago when I was really in good shape I would do a routine that went like this : Skip 3 minutes Do a set of pushups or dips Skip 1 minute Do a set of pullups Skip 1 minute Do a set of squats etc I had worked up to about 7 exercises in addition to the skipping for 3 sets Thinking about this makes me want to start again

Yesterday I set my GymBoss timer for 1 min of work 30 sec of rest for 30 rounds. I'd skip a minute, rest, shadow box w/ sprawls for a minute, rest, skip a minute, rest, and then crawls for a minute. I repeated that series for 45 minutes and I was worn out. I tried to get 3 sprawls on each of the shadow boxing minutes.
Last year when I was skipping a lot I hadn't ran any at all and just decided to take a jog. I ran 5 miles pretty much with no problems wind wise.

I used to be a rope skipping fanatic, I remember in high school I would routinely skip for 50 minutes nonstop without a miss. Ah the glory days! Don't currently do this because my last rope broke about a year ago and I haven't gotten around to getting a new one. Way back when it was routinely stated that 10 minutes of rope jumping was the "equivalent" of 30 minutes of running...

I went to boxing clubs on and off for six years before I learned to skip at all and I still have to hop with both feet at once

I found that I could "feel" the rope with just socks

I've been more into conditioning workouts lately. I believe You live somewhere where the weather can get cold, icy or snowfall. I workout in my basement where I can do things like pressing, get-ups, and other stuff between the rafters. But I can't jump rope down there. And doing it outside right now is not wise because of the ice, don't feel like busting my You know what. So if I was to do it outside in the grass what would You recommend? Shoes or no shoes in the grass?

It may be silly and it's not exactly the same but you can mimic it the best way you can. I get quite a workout from that.

I read that Dan Lurie did this for cardio. I've tried it before, not bad. As bad as I am at jumping rope, , I look like a champ doing it this way. Machinehead thanks for posting that.

I'll tell you this much the skip thats almost like you are running is a rear end buster for me, especially with the heavy rope.

Shoes or no shoes in the grass? I'm with you Michael on more conditioning based work. I guess it would be called strength-endurance now a day. I know my body just feels much better doing this type of work rather than the heavy barbell grind stuff anymore. I occasionally stick a barbell workout in here or there, but I just don't seem to get the benefits I'm looking for anymore with that heavy wearing on my nerve training. I want to wake up the next day and feel like I have energy but also feel just to enough from the training to know I did something. I've done 2 band sessions using a curl and press with my life line cable set and my biceps/elbows and shoulders feel super. This evening Dad and I did 10 rounds of 1) curl and press with 2 brown cables 2) straight arm band pushdowns 3) bodyweight rows on rings 4) hindu squats, done in giant set fashion. Followed this up with some isometric holds with the iso-bow and L-Sits. Feel worked by also feel awesome right now.
