At one time he had a really good thing going. Many smart people there who are even smarter here because they do not have to only post carefully filtered training information that was weight free to mollify the autocratic didact. If he was nicer he could be a tragic figure.

No brag, just fact (funny...haven't heard that in a LONG time): the site SFUK and a few others said with the exception of some of silliness on the part of the host (DSRs as the ultimate muscle builder, the ridiculous claims, etc.) the collection of people at that time were some of the most knowledgeable and rationale around. Good, solid training advise via various options with lots of experienced people. Guessing the host's shallow ego couldn't handle it and within 18 - 24 months, the tone changed and mystery marvels came out of the woodwork like Marlon and "Big" Jim & sons. Flush the toilet, matey, she's circling the drain...

I wanted to PM because I didn't want to seem impersonal in a public setting and wanted to be straight with just you TR. I'm not going to join AMM at this time because I dont feel the need to. But since you insisted. Here's my take on JP from my personal perspective....He is flawed in so many aspects, he's not perfect, too much of a perfectionist and has an ego like a lot of guys do. I can't stand his religious stuff and quite I'm anything but religious since I find a lot of it to be over dramatic and full of themselves and coming from a Catholic family on one side and Jewish ancestors on the other. I don't trust in a lot of ways but I do like our conversations we've had for years on the phone, talking history, life and fitness. He's never been less generous, giving me stuff for free when I had him borrow stuff I've had. He gave me a copy of the Mighty Atom's book which was amazing to me and will always be grateful for that. I don't gave a rat's ass when he'll bring out the damn belt and if he did I would use it. I find nothing superior, only what benefits me personally. I have no need to knock him because he does that to himself. He can be entertaining at times and if he has a mental problem, that's his issue . I roll with things and I leave if I feel the need to. I'm being real here and I'm not going to BS you guys. I don't follow anyone's methods to a T otherwise where's room for me to find something for myself. I take the best of what benefits me and mold it using my intuition. Lastly, JP will change things to fit him and will exploit it on others, it's obvious. He's going to do what he wants and sooner or later, things will come to an end for him. Well said Ben

Everything you can imagine except weight training. Atlas, self resistance, calisthenics, Royce with tons of information on Chi Kung and Macky who is also wealth of information, TR with all subjects under the sun on exercise and diet, a lot of Bruce's Zen stuff morphing into his board and books, Malcolm and his brother on historical training and longbow, how old actors, sports and movie personalities trained, some isos but not like now. I found site because I was heavily into archery and Bronze Bow showed up in search. That is how I found site. I mentioned how shooting longbows and recurves are great exercise and healthy for you mentally too and I posted about some of that stuff too. It was wide ranging and detailed and a joy to read while it lasted.
I liked boxing and learned some cool things. I am big Rocky Marciano fan and that is where I learned he liked to use a 300 pound heavy bag. Foolishly I decided to make my own. I took a shortcut and put some iron plates in the bag surrounded by towels and sponge and duck tape at the center of sand filled bag. One night about two months after pounding it the weights shifted internally just enough that one of my punches hit a barbell plate almost head on with my fist. The pain was unbelievable. No idea how I did not break my hand. First time I became afraid of an inanimate object.

One thing I learned was that Charles Bronson the actor liked to use bungee cords for isos. I started using them and really like them and how they yield. The black ones that are made of black rubber, not the new colorful synthetic ones. Make sure the s hooks are not attached. From Bruce learned to use dog toy but that is more recent. There are really too many to list.
I used to caution JP on all the running and high rep calisthenics and how those would damage his joints. And sure enough, he transitioned to rebounder, Exercise Genie and now almost 100 percent isos. I think this indicates some of the harmful effects of all those reps.
I did have a great conversation with him on phone about original Ironman magazine, Peary Rader, Bernar McFadden and others. He was very knowledgeable about weight training. I mentioned before. Gordon Anderson was huge contributor to the original Sandow site and donated many courses and he also knew a lot about iron game history.
Another guy I liked was Free.

I always liked boxing myself. I use to watch the old fights. They kind of killed it off a little with all that pay per view stuff. They are starting to show some good fights on regular TV recently. They had some on Fox Saturday night. The main event, the referee's facial expressions were hilarious. Check his 7th round reaction:
Sounded like a fun forum. So weight stuff wasn't allowed on that forum? So Blue Speedos banned people for talking about weights? I actually find Bruce's site pretty informative with a wide range of training ideas which I find less restrictive. Seems like plenty of knowledgable guys here.

Yes TR I was part of that very early group. You are completely right. So much good information gone. We had a great time. Do you remember when my buddy Old Uncle Mal challenged the "host" to the Dand-off, anywhere, anytime? He was living in Canada at the time -- he contacted me a couple of times on Portalguy's board via PMs from northern India. He'd fallen in love with the region while he was in the military (think he wife was from there). IsoRez was a great guy as well. Remember Tyler Haas? 6'6" (?) tennis player, bad, bad back problems but swore by high volume KBs and gymnastics. Sold those rings that went like crazy with Crossfit people: journal.crossfit.com/article/cfj-applications-of-the-support-on-rings

We did talk about weights, but, not the big iron bro stuff. It was more along the lines of very common sense type stuff -- functional training, the use of light weights via Vince Gironda approach. KBs were a big topic as they had really taken off as well -- Tyler Hass was HUGE on KBs and DD to the chagrin of the "host". He'd PM'd a few of us, including me, to give Tyler a hard time but to the credit of the host he never banned, blocked or deleted the posts or links.

Several of us did and we on AMM began speculating that the sudden emphasis on isometrics was the result of the 'wear and tear' of all of those useless reps. I remember when several people were trying the high rep Atlas push ups back on the first board and -- while the names escape me -- they were reporting shoulder and some elbow issues as well. Lots of BS advice from the internationally renowned coach. You may recall when I began suggesting Super Slow -- or at least slow down the reps, use a little more tension -- to avoid the high rep wear and tear. I don't recall if I was shut down or 'the host' decided it was his idea. One of the saddest victims was young Nate who ended up with a bad back and shoulder or elbow issues, barely 19 or 20. Never believed any of his claims about going to visit the Raders or Ironman that I'd hear on the calls. And there were all of the conversations with the Minneapolis guy who made the Crushers/was an arm wrestler (?), if I recall. I came to believe -- still do -- he was a wanna be weight lifter and read some magazines, but, that was it.

I am big Rocky Marciano fan and that is where I learned he liked to use a 300 pound heavy bag. He had that bag made for him out of necessity. He was so powerful he could virtually knock a regular bag up to the ceiling. Rocky was quite a phenomena - small and clumsy. I heard Jose Torres once talking about the heavyweights. He said that Marciano had two left feet, but he had heart and amazing power. He was only 5'10", 185 lbs.
