Posting this to provide another perspective regarding epigenetics, age, etc.
Derek Turnbull, the legendary runner from New Zealand who dominated nearly every middle and long distance event for years is probably a good example of why eating is critical and not playing Russian roulette with your diet is important. Turnball was an animal...just unbelievable. He ran the family ranch/farm -- I recently purchased his bio The Fastest Old Man in the World (very hard read, haven't gotten too far into the book) and after getting up, repairing fences/barbed wire, working with the animal, retreiving strays, the man would clean up, change and go out and set a national or international record.
Geezus. Only a couple of his records have been broken in recent times, but at +65 the man ran a 4:56 mile and 34:42 10k. How many so-called "fit" 20 somethings can do an 8:00 mile?
Sadly, Turnbull's diet got the better of him. His bio confirmed his diet was heavy in meat products, dairy and after a series of strokes and other health issues he passed at 79. (Side note: Vince Gironda was a meat & eggs man as well. Meat, eggs, dessicated liver. Had an amazing eight pack. Someone who worked with Vince shared that he began suffering health issues in his early/mid 70s via TIAs, massive heart attack at 1979.)
Turnbull no doubt was an epitomy of what Gordon Anderson called living life to its fullest. Badass and accomplished athlete, a successful rancher/farmer and great family man per his bio. But unlike the 90-something rower, Turnbull's genetics did not handle a high protein/high fat diet, no did Vince Gironda's. Yep, there are outliers would can -- but testing, not guessing may a good idea before embarking on that type of diet. And, just look at Paul Saladino, the carnivore MD who backed off. Mark Sisson -- the Paleo dude from the 2000s who recently confirmed in an interview he's backed off of Paleo eating.
