The thing about chopping wood and beating tires that is superior to weights for an athlete is the fact that there is so little eccentric component. Very few sports make use of eccentric movement and eccentrics tend to be taxing on the system in many ways and eat into recovery. Sled pulls are popular too for the same reason, isometrics as well. Weights are not always the answer depending of course on what the goal is. chandlerthemagistrate, I reckon your chopping and beating is beneficial also because unlike weights, you accelerate all the way, so much like michael's dirty remote woodlands secret C4 addiction - explosive!

I think a lot of people who swing at tires slow down near the end because they don't want the hammer bouncing back at them. A similar exercise as far as power generation goes is medicine ball slams into a heavy bag lying on the floor. If you can get a comparable setup like this then really go for it; I've always hit hard (not as hard as Shavers obviously) and people commented on the difference between me slamming the bag and other people trying to bounce it up.
On second thoughts don't go for it, we are all too old now and should just get big arms and healthy hearts.

One time I used it for a workout of forward-thrusting puts after which I trotted to where it landed, picked it up snd did it again 50 times. Maybe this is an example of what you're talking about and it's definitely a cardiovascular workout.
