'My real advice would be this: chop wood, lift hay bales; go back to old-school, natural methods of training. My trainer, Archie Moore, he told me to go away and chop trees for two weeks before a fight – and I did and it made all the difference in the world; all the difference to my life. I’d say doing things like that increases your punching power by at least 25 percent – forget lifting weights, that just makes you muscle-bound and takes away your speed. Weights are no good for you, that’s what I say. Go back to nature when you train, that’s what I did.' - Earnie Shavers

I liked Ernie Shavers; he delivered his part in some great boxing matches when you could view them on broadcast television.

Could Ernie have been a disciple of, dare it be said, John Peterson?

He had one of the most powerful punches in boxing. Trust me these quotes are funny and illuminating. The last one is my favorite. Love boxing threads
Larry Holmes: "Earnie hit me harder than any other fighter, including Mike Tyson. He hit me and I was face down on the canvas hearing saxophonist Jimmy Tillis."
·Tex Cobb: "Earnie could punch you in the neck with his right hand and break your ankle."
·Muhammad Ali: "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa"
·Ron Lyle: "Hey man, that's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life. And George Foreman could punch, but none of them could hit like Earnie Shavers did. When he hit you, the lights went out. I can laugh about it now, but at the time,it wasn't funny."
·Ron Lyle: "Hardest he's ever been hit: Earnie Shavers. The ground came up and met me. That's all I remember."
·James "Quick" Tillis: "Shavers hit so hard he turned horse p*ss into gasoline! He hit me so hard he brought back tomorrow. When he hit me… I was seeing pink rats and cats and animals smoking cigarettes. I was in the land of make-believe." "No doubtThe baddest mf'er I fought was Earnie Shavers. That mf'er can make July into June and made me jump over the mf'n moon. He hit me so hard, I thought I was on the corner smoking cigarette and eating a spam sandwich. That's how hard that mf'er hit."

It's been a long time, but I think the very first guy I saw using a sledge hammer on a tire was fight trainer Ross Enamait. Scroll down the page to see what Ross has to say about Earnie.

Love this interview where George mentions he never fought Shavers..."thank goodness"

Shavers was someone who could hurt people without having to hit them clean. A lot of his knockouts happen when his opponents are barely able to lift their arms up. I kind of think of him as the opposite of Tyson, who focused on speed and misdirection to catch people off guard.
Anyway, I think depending on how it's done, chopping wood can be great for developing power and coordination. Separate to that, I used to also split logs from as short a distance as possible, strengthening the hands and wrists.

Yeah I'll just change my career to copy people who constantly complain about work-related pain, great tip.

Well then you just figure out how to do it better. If Mr. Shavers did it as well as did his best to avoid being punched in the face, by people being paid to try and knock him out, it must be possible.

Not many trees in prison and inmates having axes to swing is frowned upon there.

This is from a Boxing Scene comment about his training 09-20-2010, 01:53 AM I read his book he didn't really go into much detail but he did kind of give an overview for his 2nd fight with Holmes it said- early morning:5mile run +agility exercises(didn't go into what they were) then breakfast 4 eggs, steak, all beef bacon, whole wheat toast, and fruit 2 mile walk after breakfast to digest then back to bed. afternoon gymwork/sparring(again no details on that) chop wood then go for a swim, watch fight films then to bed at 9:30. he also said he would go rowing on the lake and that along with the wood chopping increased his power. he makes mention of the wood chopping several times through out the book especially when Archie Moore was training him. he said that on certain days Archie would put him through what he called a "full tilt" workout(again no datails) that was 3 hours long and he would lose 5-8 lbs when he did it. he said that he had to eat alot of ice cream during training camps to help keep his weight up. thats about it really.
I think the ice cream is the magic ingredient.

Archie moore had 132 knockouts, the 2nd most of all time so not a bad guy to look up to if your job is to punch people into near death experiences.

The thing about chopping wood and beating tires that is superior to weights for an athlete is the fact that there is so little eccentric component. Very few sports make use of eccentric movement and eccentrics tend to be taxing on the system in many ways and eat into recovery.
Sled pulls are popular too for the same reason, isometrics as well. Weights are not always the answer depending of course on what the goal is.
