I just happened to remember a phenomena my wife and I had witnessed some time last year. I have, now and then, seen a hawk soaring above, usually one, every once in awhile, two, and they've never been very high up. My wife and I were in our back yard when we looked up and saw dozens of tiny birds circling around above us. When we looked closer, we saw that they were hawks. They were so high up, they appeared tiny. There looked to be at least 50 of them, all flying around and around. And, yes, they were easily identifiable has being hawks.
Has anyone here ever seen this? Do we have any bird brains on this forum who can explain this behavior?

They might have spotted you outdoors in your backyard wearing your wife beater t-shirt and confused you for an oversized road kill. Hawks are always hungry so be careful.

Hawks are a totem of mine. When I'm driving in the country, if I see a hawk nearby flying around, I know I'm okay.
Of course, others may have a different view......

Me and a m8 were in a small truck when it broke down on the M40 motorway. While we were waiting for the recovery truck a group (kettle?) of red kites were circling overhead. Red kites are a medium to large bird of prey that feed on small mammals and carrion. It was like a scene in the old Western movies when the vultures would circle overhead a wagon train that had been attacked by the Comanches and one of the pilgrims was half dead and tied to a wagon wheel.

Red tail hawks are often seen in areas near me. I've seen the flocking mentioned. I was driving and had to stop to watch.
