I'm a guy with a suspension training background. one day I stumbled upon the angelfire website on self-resistance, this gave me the idea to combine the two and make a post on reddit (linked here). After discovering the forum here though, it appears that some of the people here have used this method. In case I'm adding something new, I'm glad to contribute. Either way, I'd like to hear some feedback. The people on reddit were dismissive and provided only limited amounts of constructive criticism.

Welcome! More than enough criticism can be obtained on this forum. With enough wild claims, some of the aging macho men here will construct an entire website to offer their criticism.

Kag, I'm writing this from my phone because my computer is down. So it will be hard to remember everything you wrote on that post on Reddit. If it's got You interested and You enjoy it don't worry about what anyone says. I used self resistance and bodyweight exercise for years. I don't use it now but between that and diet I lost 50lbs. My experience and opinion:1) It was good for muscle endurance 2) , I thought I looked more muscular 3) I had chronic pain(could have been change in diet) which went away 4) Nagging injuries went away 5) It felt good. Some people don't think this is a plus because most have the mentality that if you're not gasping for air or sore as hell it's useless exercise. I learned a lot from self resistance and will never dismiss it even though I do not do it now. Well, I still do neck self resistance, , that's it. The reason why I stopped was I found that I lost strength to lift, carry, and push external objects. That's all stuff I need to do for my physical jobs. Plus, I really like KBs, DBs, cables, and bodyweight. I just decided I didn't want to limit or marry myself to one training protocol. We all like different things. I would say that from my experience, self resistance can be good for bodybuilding. But for strength on external objects it can be limited. I would say try it out to get Your own experience and opinions of it. Usually 4 to 6 weeks for an experienced trainer should be enough time to tell you something. Don't make it complicated. This rope PDF might be of interest to you. sierraexercise.proboards.com/thread/267/ropercise-dynaflex

Work one limb against the other using another with friction resistance - e.g. rope or webbing suspended over a high bar - Exergenie - Gruntergenie as seen in Shen's Angelfire Workshop

Bud is talking about ISO-metrics so I don't know if this old post will be helpful, but HERE it is. The resistance exercises I enjoy most are the yielding "iso"metrics, which are really not exercises with strictly NO movement, but movement is limited, controlled and sometimes it includes shaking as muscles tire or load is high or awkward, as it is when playing with stones.

Yes, in my experience it's pretty easy on the joints
Hm.. I wonder if the loss of strength is related to the strength curve in self-resistance exercises. Theoretically, if you pit one limb vs another you should be able to produce close to 90-95% of your RM. But then, due to the fact that the strength curve is a lot different from free weights might have led you to notice loss in strength in functional applications.
Ah, yes that's pretty much what I'm doing

Just so you know, I never did it like Gruntbrain in the pictures. I did limb against limb. I also used a towel and the Sierra suspension trainer to apply resistance to the opposite limb. And I would definitely say that lifting heavy logs, saws, dragging brush, pushing a 400lb machine, etc... is a lot different. I stopped getting injuries when I was doing SR. But that could have been the weight loss and change of diet. After some years of doing mostly self resistance I started getting the nagging injuries again.

I think that, just as a swimmer doesn't look like a powerlifter who doesn't look like a rugby player, etc, how you exercise will affect your appearance, abilities and strength for various specific efforts. I don't have only one way of exercising, but I don't try to cover them all either. I just do what I enjoy and whatever gives me the benefit I want to get out of it.

I agree Mr.P. Although I have to be able to perform so that plays into what I do. I enjoy just about every type of exercise. But I will say my favorite training sessions right now are KBs and Bruce's cables.
Go back to the topic of self resistance. Finding and learning about it from the Bag Lady with the ponytail was a detriment. His way was driven by ego and he tried to reinvent the wheel. But I learned from those mistakes and if I ever went back to it I know the way that works for me.
If I was smart back then there would been three guys on the internet I would have got my information from for self resistance and Bruce is one of them. The two other guys most here don't like but I learned stuff for that type of training from them.
