Has anyone every gotten their knee drained? I have gotten both knees drained multiple times because of job related reasons. Hard to explain but I hit my right knee pretty hard and it is double the size. It doesn't hurt but it's like a pillow, . That last time I had my knee drained the orthopedic said something about the bursa but I can't remember. If anyone here has experienced this, how many times can You get Your knee drained before it's a problem? Probably stupid asking this question here but it's hard to research on the internet.

Sorry I don't have any useful info or experiences but years ago on the irongarm forums there was a guy witha knee problem who insisted on doing depth jumps several times a week and was regularly draining his knees himself. I don't remember what happened to him.

I looked it up and he was draining both knees sometimes more than once a day for the better part of a year, typically taking out something like 30-40ml. Sometimes he made posts saying in his experience just keep draining it and it will eventually get better, but it never seemed to be totally better when he said that.

I would not take a chance on draining my own knee. You could get an infection and that could lead into something serious. If You every get a chance watch the E60 on ESPN about Alex Smith. He got a infection in his leg after a serious operation and almost lost his leg. I definitely would not take any advice from that guy. If he's got to keep draining his knee than he's got serious problems. Thank God for my health insurance. Everytime I got my knee drained it was good.

Michael, Sept 2018 , I had my right knee drained, it was swollen the size of a grapefruit, the physicians assistant took 4 vials of fluid out of my knee, I have bone on bone bone in both my knees, they said I’m going to eventually need knee replacement, fast forward to June 2019, my knee swells up again and I get it drained, I get a second cortisone shot in my right knee, I decided to to a lot of research on arthritis in the knees,I don’t want any knee replacement surgery, I started taking glucosamine and MSM, tumeric and ginger capsules and collagen peptides, those 3 have been game changers for me, someday my knees ache a bit, but no severe pain and no swelling, also before I workout I ride the stationary bike for 10 minutes to warm up my knees, andbI have started doing kb goblet squats which I feel are helping my knees, I’m not a big supplement guy, but those 3 have been huge for me. I can squat almost ass to the grass , which for the longest time I couldn’t, hope this helps , if you have anymore questions let me know.

My 86 year old father had one of his drained twice in the last 2 years (same knee, 1 year apart). He said it did not hurt as they numbed it prior to the procedure.
He also received a cortisone shot in that knee and was only pain free for about a week. They say repeated use of cortisone shots wear the joint out.
He had both knees replaced the day before Thanksgiving in 1999. He began complaining of pain in one and although it was not noticeably swollen at the time of aspiration (draining), a surprising amount came out. He needs to have the replacement replaced but with COVID he will wait. He can still walk well, just feels pain, some days more than others.

Wow, sorry for Your dad. My knees feel really good. I must of smacked my right knee but didn't realize it. I've had both knees drained atleast 3 times. The cause is mostly from banging them on the job.

Thanks Moxohol. I have no pain, just fluid in the knee. I have to say using kettlebells for swings, squats, and reverse lunges has really helped my knees. Also I've been walking everyday with my wife for 30 minutes. I lost one of my jobs just recently, hopefully temporarily, because of this pandemic so I have some extra time on my hands.
