One of the guys I worked with was in his early sixties and as the leading hand in a line gang some years before, took over as boss when the foreman was away. He kept getting stick from a bulky young Maori guy who wouldn't take orders from a "pommie bastard" and who stood on the tray of the line truck arguing and abusing Ken who was standing on the ground at the back trying to reason with him.
Things escalated and the Maori stepped forward with the threat he was gonna "down" Ken, jumping off the back of the truck.
He was upper-cut on the way down and lay there out cold for several minutes. No more trouble after that.
Ken was an ex British commando who had spent WW2 in Changi after the fall of Singapore. Six years of it, and survived. Surprise !
