Yes tulip poplars grow faster. But because they grow so fast the wood is weaker. So if there is a bad storm the branches can break easier in a storm. I think Bruce's is a red maple that could grow 12-18 inches a year. Yeah, slower but stronger tree. He'll get enough shade soon.

Yeah, there are trade offs. I have a some in my yard that were planted around 1960. They are now the tallest trees in my yard. They do drop branches, but, possibly due to their spot in the yard, they don't drop any more branches than my oak trees, as far as I can tell. High winds always require pickup of dead branches after. Still, tulip poplar is used in construction, I think? So, it must be OK strong?
I wonder if pruning down the top a bit every year would help it to branch more out to the sides? Never tried it, but when I came here, those trees were already out of my reach to prune at top.

I never watched the Sopranos while it was on, caught a segment every now and then, and then a couple of years ago I watched the whole thing via On Demand. Frankly, I didn't like those people. Good and moral people are not supposed to like criminals or their behavior.

THIS supports what Michael said about maple trees.

About a year after my wife and I first moved down here from NYC, (where we lived not too far from John Gotti's stomping grounds) I was helping my neighbor the farmer and we were having lunch at his office when his daughter brought up The Sopranos. The whole family was really into that show while I had never watched it. They asked me if we watched it and I laughed and said that I'd seen enough of them in NYC. They then said that they thought that my wife and I were on the witness protection program when we first moved here ! I got quiet and in a very serious voice told them that if they saw a Cadillac in my driveway with NY plates and two Italian looking guys in it....you don't know nothin' ! They sat there speechless and I gave them a nod.....and about a week later told them that I was only joking, but remember about that Caddy

I said, "Yeah. Benny "The Bump" Sorentino. If he calls, you don't know me. You don't know nuthin' about me. You never heard of me." My wife and I planted a maple tree so that we could have a bit of New England in our yard in Autumn. There aren't many maple trees around here.

They look really nice. You are an artist. You can tell you live in a very nice place. They would suddenly disappear overnight in some locales. Great handmade doll house for significant other. It would have a little card with it. Took me forever to make this and lots of tender care, but that is how long I will love you my little love bird. Here.......right here.
