Every since 2006-07 I've been hearing this all over the internet," Functional Strength ". What does functional strength mean? Some people say a certain type of exercise gives You functional strength.
When I stopped lifting weights in 2006-07 this was definitely something new to me. Because I thought what I was doing was functional strength. When I lifted I was doing bodybuilding type workouts. I didn't have any challenges with my everyday life.
My opinion is many types of training gives you functional strength. All strength is functional in my opinion. If it isn't what good is it? I don't think one type of training serves to create functional strength for everyone. We all have different needs.I think most people look at fitness by someone's looks. You know, if he's ripped he's in great shape. In shape for what?
I'm no expert just trying to start a discussion. What are Your thoughts?

Functional Strength to me means exercise like heavy farmers walk or heavy wheelbarrow. Pull ups could be functional since if you fell in a hole and needed to pull your self up to get out, or an elevator jammed between floors and you can open the doors and pull yourself out. Functional Strength exercises help with doing a manual laboring job.

IMHO, Cross Fit and probably the newer military methods for training are "functional" -- you've got better all-around preparation for a variety of tasks. You'll never win a powerlifting or bb'ing contest, but, you can chin, run, swim, carry, etc., which -- again, my opinion -- has more applications to the real world.
Clearly, nothing is going to replace "the real thing" in terms of work -- carrying a refrigerator, digging post holes, putting a suitcase in the overhead space on an airplane without destroying your shoulders -- but, CF tries to cover as many areas as possible. And the military folks I've spoken with called volume BW training "old school" with their selective adoption of many Crossfit methods.

Good points, but no thank you on the Cross fit and military training. Hurts me just watching that stuff. My training helps me stay pain free, sometimes injury free, and feel good. It's all the functional strength I need and I enjoy what I do.

"Functional strength" sounds like something, but it's not. Someone made it up to sound different and to sell something - idea, merch, text, seminar, etc. All strength is functional. Good grief guys! WTF?

Indeed! It's "Functional Nerve Force" and there's a pushup video that demonstrates it!

It's so if your wife gets fat you can still do a lot of positions with her, is what it means.

Everyone has a different opinion of what "functional" is and different reasons for functional style exercise As a young fireman i did bodybuilding style workouts, because I thought they resulted in strength and fitness, and to a degree they did But, one of my reasons to workout was to stay fit to do the job which involved climbing, crawling, dragging loads, lifting and pulling under difficult conditions and in awkward positions I began to experiment and try to incorporate exercises that would help in these activities After retiring, I discovered sandbags, which are a perfect tool for what i wanted to do back then They are ( or can be ) heavy, awkward to lift, the weight shifts, and dragging them, lifting them etc can be more difficult than conventional weights Wish I knew about them back then

All strength is functional.
"Functional Strength" is just something people coined to sell a certain kind of workout.
I do what most would consider "functional" workouts, but when I moved recently, my friend who does bodybuilding types of routines was pretty helpful. His strength seemed pretty functional to me. My other buddy who hardly does strength training but does a lot of grappling was also pretty helpful during the move. We were all pretty strong guys who made moving a lot easier than it is for people who don't do any kind of strength training.
People confuse the "specificity" principle for "functional." It's true that the powerlifter won't be as strong as the jiu-jitsu man in a grappling match, because the jiu-jitu man has develop a strength that is more specific for his sport. It's also true that the grappler probably won't lift as much as the deadlifter, because the deadlifter has fine-tuned a specific strength for that sport. But both guys are going to be "strong."
